Importing electronics

Hi all:

So I'm going to McGill this fall (I'm from the US) and am a bit concerned about the pre-departure guide's warning that "Students arriving at a port of entry with personal belongings such as electronic equipment, should pay close attention to the Canada customs importation rules."

So I can't get a straight answer from international student services about what that means, nor will they give me a straight answer on who to call to find out (the specfic border I'm passing through? the consulate? immigration canada? immigration quebec?).

Does anyone have any experience with this? Specifically I plan to bring with me computer and music-making equipment. Much of this stuff is unique or hard-to-acquire, so I can't simply sell and then re-buy when I'm in Montreal.

Thanks!
Mike

We have never had any problem bringing computers, stereos, video games, tvs or other equipment into Canada. As long as it is for your personal use, you will have no trouble. Electronics are about 10-20% more expensive in Canada, even without the tax, so it makes sense to bring them in. At the border you will be asked if you plan on leaving anything in Canada, just say it is for your use as a student.
