Impressed with Pomona College

Recently returned from visiting Pomona College in Claremont, CA and I'm happy to say after deliberating between numerous schools, D has chosen to attend Pomona College.

D had excellent schools to choose from...in the end Pomona College stood out above the rest. The school did an excellent job of hosting prospectives and their parents. The focus on building relationships between faculty and students, research opportunities (no grad students), and attention to building a sense of community among students/staff/alumni won her over. An average class size of 14 students, beautiful campus, classy surrounding town of Claremont, proximity to Los Angeles and Orange county cities, the Pacific Ocean, mountains, and desert all are very attractive. The food was very good. The dorms were more spacious than all others we saw on college visits. The students were friendly, seemed confident and happy to be themselves and the Dean of Admissions made himself present all four days of our visit. After this long process, we are at peace with our D's choice and feel very happy she found such an excellent place to study/live for the next four years. I highly recommend that you seriously consider Pomona College.

Did your daughter visit during the heat wave?

The kids I’ve met there have been so friendly and welcoming. She is sure to find some good friends.

Hint: On move in day in August there is a big used items sale. We were able to pick up a fridge and 2 fans for my daughter’s room. The items are refreshed from trucks through out the morning so don’t be discouraged if you see all the fridges having parents sitting on them. We got one two hours later when we walked past a truck. The interior was kind of gross but we borrowed some cleanser and it was good as new. $25.

kaku -

So happy to know that your D chose Pomona! We’re at the other end of the spectrum - our D will be graduating next month after four great years there.

And you’re right - she truly benefited from all the wonderful opportunities there: cross-registration with the other CCs, being a research assistant to professors in her field, doing a paid internship in Pomona, serving as a sponsor . . . the list goes on. Plus, we’ve felt like part of the College community - attending events in our area and hosting events as well. You’re going to have a great four years!

Congratulations on your daughter’s acceptance to Pomona, kaku. That’s great news that she has made the choice to attend there.

Our family just went through the same process, and although our D will be taking a gap year beforehand (she’s only 16), she is very excited about starting at Pomona in Fall 2010. To say she (and we) loved it would be an understatement.

A question: Since you seem to have done quite a bit of due diligence before making the decision, would you mind me asking which other schools she was considering?
