I am considering applying to Yale as a transfer student next year and I was wondering how current students and alumni have felt about their time there. I have a few questions regarding your personal opinions of Yale. Feel free to answer any or all of the questions, or come up with some other insight regarding Yale. Thanks!

How good are the classes? How difficult are they? How good are the professors? Would it be terribly difficult to maintain a GPA above a 3.8 in a Biology major?

How is the social life? Is Greek life prominent? Is there a big party scene? How do most students spend their time outside the classroom when not studying? How is the area around Yale?

Finally, would you recommend going to Yale? Why or why not? Feel free to list any pros and cons that might stand out.

You might see this same thread in other forums. This is because I am considering a good number of schools.

You can find answers to most of your questions using the search function. But it looks like the answer to most of your questions is “It depends.”

^ Actually, the answer to most of those questions isn’t “it depends.” Congratulations on getting into Yale early, but, frankly, you still aren’t a Yale student.

I don’t actually have time to answer these questions - which are good ones - because I have a paper due at dawn (during spring break? yeah.) but I’ll come back to this later!

How good are classes? Some wonderful. Some mediocre. But you have the flexibility to choose. How difficult? SOme very. some not as much. Some downright easy. 3.8GPA difficult? Who is to say. It’s about you.

Social life revolves around Res colleges and only a tiny bit around Greek scene. Outside classroom students are extremely involved in near everything. They aren’t sitting in front of the TV watching Jerry Springer.

New Haven. Around campus is very nice. A few blocks away and it can get sketchy.

Yes.

But also know that the transfer rate is about two percent so don’t get yer hopes up. Good luck

For the most part, classes are great. They’re difficult, but not impossibly so. (It is, of course, possible to take only impossibly hard classes, or incredibly easy ones). Keeping a 3.8 GPA in Bio isn’t an easy feat, but it’s also far from impossible. You may not get to party every weekend night, but as long as you work efficiently it’s totally possible.

The social life is in my opinion great. Greek life exists for those who want it, but is a very insignificant part of campus life. The party scene is very diverse – if you want “big” parties (crazy frat keggers) those exist, but if you’d rather have a beer with your buddies, or not drink at all, that’s possible too. When not in class, students spend a LOT of time on extracurriculars – whether it’s theater, debate, sports, singing or fighting with foam swords, Yalies dedicate an almost-absurd amount of time and effort to their ECs. The area around Yale is like any mid-sized city. There are poor people, there are homeless people, and yes, there is crime. But if you know where not to go at certain early hours of the morning, you’ll be fine.

I absolutely recommend coming to Yale. Best four years I ever could have imagined.
