We dropped off our son at Hobart and William Smith today and I'd like to share my thoughts. In short, I continue to be impressed with HWS. It truly is the right place for our son. It was a well-oiled machine today that ran smoothly. People were helpful throughout the day--staff, administration, orientation student helpers--even to the point of finding a Band-aid for the blister on my heel! The question and answer panels were useful in assuaging parents' concerns and demonstrated the depth of support the school provides to help the students learn to make good choices. Throughout the day, I was struck by the thoughtfulness, respect and attention to detail on every level. One example is the personal attention the Hobart First Year Dean took early this summer to personally select EACH of the Hobart students' academic schedules, after thoroughly reviewing their admissions materials and aspirations; this care has really paid off as I think our son's courses will be a great fit for him. We chatted extensively with our son's advisor/first year seminar professor at a reception at the end of the day; he described how our son at the end of the first class today went up to him and said, "This is just the stuff I want to talk about!" What a great start to college!

Hello CarolynB,

I have a daughter who attended orientation and started today at William Smith. I too found the orientation/move-in extremely well done. It felt like the school knew what they were doing and did it effortlessly and with finese. I too think my daughter has found a real gem in Geneva. I didn’t even know about HWS until her junior year in high school. It is one of those best kept secrets. I wish you son continued excitment and passion for Hobart.

JoannB, how is your daughter doing? Has she gotten settled in her dorm and established some friends? Is she enjoying her classes? What activities is she checking out?

Our son tried out for varsity sailing and didn’t make the cut. However, he’s going to work hard to make it next year, so that’s a good attitude. In the meantime, he’s going to participate in the debate team, something he’s wanted to do for a long time; that should be challenging and fun. He’s enjoying his classes and making some good friends. His friends come from a variety of backgrounds so he’ll learn so much from them. I’d say he’s on his way. I can’t ask for anything more!

CarolynB,

Good to hear your son is liking classes. I heard the debate team has been doing really well in the past several years.

Good luck to your son at HWS!
