Impressions of the Greeks system at KU

I'd love to hear from students: what are the sororities & fraternities like at KU?

Not a student, but my older D graduated from KU a year ago (a non Greek). The impression that I got is that the kids in the Greek system loved it, but many kids on campus felt the Greek kids were just a bunch of partiers. I don’t think that opinion is necessarily true - as on all campuses, you see hard partiers that are Greek and not. I saw many kids from the Greek system as recipients of awards at many presentations over the 4 years my D was there. The Greeks do a lot of community service, put on a wonderful program called the Rock Chalk Review, etc.

The complaints I have heard are -

 1. Due to the financial difficulties everyone is experiencing, to increase revenue they were putting 3 students into rooms built for 2 in the houses.
 2. Belonging can get expensive with dues, buying a t-shirt for absolutely every event they participate in, etc.
 3. The “attendance obligations” imposed by the fraternity or sorority can get in the way if you want to pursue other activities on campus - belong to a music group, participate in a sport, etc.
