I'd love to hear from students: what are the sororities & fraternities like at KU?

Not a student, but my older D graduated from KU a year ago (a non Greek). The impression that I got is that the kids in the Greek system loved it, but many kids on campus felt the Greek kids were just a bunch of partiers. I don’t think that opinion is necessarily true - as on all campuses, you see hard partiers that are Greek and not. I saw many kids from the Greek system as recipients of awards at many presentations over the 4 years my D was there. The Greeks do a lot of community service, put on a wonderful program called the Rock Chalk Review, etc.

The complaints I have heard are -
- Due to the financial difficulties everyone is experiencing, to increase revenue they were putting 3 students into rooms built for 2 in the houses.
- Belonging can get expensive with dues, buying a t-shirt for absolutely every event they participate in, etc.
- The “attendance obligations” imposed by the fraternity or sorority can get in the way if you want to pursue other activities on campus - belong to a music group, participate in a sport, etc.
