I just visited Wes yesterday while doing the rounds to see colleges, and I got a great impression of it. All of the people I met there were extremely friendly, from staff to students to even locals at the shops. The campus seemed impressive and I like their approach to a curriculum (or lack thereof). I was wondering if any current or former students and/or professors could say what they like/dislike about the school and any info that seems to be important. I would also like to know what Wesleyan looks for in prospective students.

And if it is of any importance, I will be starting my senior year this month in a good public school in central NJ.

I don’t think Wesleyan looks for anything specific, because they (as most colleges do) want a well-rounded class and need a little bit of everything. However, I did notice a very big theater scene there.

I liked Wesleyan a lot when I visited but I didn’t get to see very many students since it was over the summer. I DID get to see the president of the college run by in jeans a T-shirt though :P. He said hi to us.

Hmm…I wonder if since the theatre scene is big that my interest in film would come in to play.

Well, Wesleyan does have a phenomenal film studies program…

Honestly, though, as mentioned above, Wesleyan is not looking for anything specific. They want to see academic rigor in your classes (i.e. that you are challenging yourself), good recommendations, and a passion for something (can be anything). That will get you seriously considered, and after that, it’s a crapshoot, depending on how they are crafting the class of 2015.

Jimbonium, try to get a copy of the book “The Gatekeepers” it was written about how the process of admitting students works at LAC’s and is rumored to be based on Wesleyan. Just so you know, it seems like at least 20 % or the students are from NJ… I know it isnt really that high, but it just seems that way. I know a few students came from public schools and some athletes came from Dom Bosco and Bergen Central.

My son is lucky enough to be a incoming freshman and due to sports, started this past Sunday. I think your perception that everyone is friendly is absolutely correct. From the beginning of the process to now… everyone just wants to help.

There are a few open groups on Facebook that might give you answers to some of your questions. I saw some self initiated student profiles on the WESADMITS14 group.

Actually, “The Gatekeepers” explicitly says on the back cover that Wesleyan is indeed the college on which it is based. The picture on the front cover is of college row’s buildings. No rumors required :)

Haha wow.
So I suppose that you all are giving me an advantage unknown to the general population? I love you all :D
