Impressive extra curriculars

what are some extra curriculars that people who got into brown did in order to put themselves ahead of the pack?

I know Brown students who have:

fought in Iraq

assisted the UN with relief in Uganda

gone to the Olympics

starred in movies (Eva Amurri)

interned with presidents (hilary and obama included)

enlisted in the Singaporean army

overcame cancer

spoke to the Nigerian Preisdent on children's rights

mastered 8 languages

build computers

and the list goes on....

Let's face it all you can do is be yourself, feel proud f your accomplishments, and let the rest take care of itself.

One doesn't enlist in the Singaporean army. It's compulsive service for every male.

And I doubt that they did these things "to put themselves ahead". !! Perhaps they were actually interested in what they were doing?

overcoming cancer is an extracurricular activity? **** i didn't know that.

A few others:

Boys/Girls Nation

Siemens Westinghouse semifinalist/finalist

Intel International Science Fair prizes

Being the president of a school group that spearheads a meaningful issue with tangible and substantial results

Entrepreneurship with tangible and substantial results

Academic paper published in Concord Review

Telluride Summer Programs

Qualifying to take the American Invitational Mathematics Examination

Adult level mastery of an unusual skill or ability

this thread is kind of ridiculous. don't get the wrong impression--most kids here are pretty normal EC-wise (at least relative to CC-types), and many of them rise to the occassion in college (it's hard to do mindblowing ECs if you come from an average HS, for example). conversely, there are also a few kids like the ones listed who have a hard time adjusting (a siemens finalist I know has no interest in science in college, and had a hard time first semester with relatively easy classes)

How many people out of a thousand something accepted, do you think did any of these things??? Perhaps 5% or less. Even for top colleges such as Brown, most kids are just hard working ordinary people.

"gone to the Olympics" --

I assume Brunonian2010 meant "competed" in the Olympics. (Yeah, it would be neat to go, but I don't think it would get you into Brown.)

^ I don't think so; in my opinion, going to the Olympics (or rather getting selected for) is in itself quite an achievement.

Brown seems to admit applicants who demonstrate passion through their extra curricular and community service involvement. They are particularly interested in students who have exceptional talent in the arts.

Rule the world. It just might help you get in.

badman-- VeryHappy was pointing out that "going" and "competed" are two different things..."going" meaning literally going...as in, going on a trip, to the Olympics. Haha :-)

LOL at setemstraight

Thank you, Hollywood --
