Hello CC community,

I'm a sophomore at high school and want to practice early for the SAT. My strongest subject is Math and my weakest one is English. My english vocabulary is very low compared to the Critical Reading section on the SAT. How can improve my vocabulary for a better scores on standardized tests.

Thanks.

Read more. Good time to start too. You will have at least a year to read as much as you can and build your reading ability. Focus on classic novels.

Yes, there are studies that show that people who read over 40 books a year score significantly higher on reading and writing tests.

Better crack those books open then ;)

I don’t doubt the legitimacy of those studies; they make sense, I’m just intrigued. Could you point me in the direction of them or post a link?

Classics also make good essay fodder.

Authors:
[Classic Authors.net / Great Literature Online](http://www.classicauthors.net/) - I just googled classic authors and pulled up this list, which also has links to their published works that are public domain.

Magazines:
TIME
The Economist
Newsweek
The New Yorker

The magazines you read should be relatively high level in terms of vocabulary.
