Alright, guys, I'd like to ask for help on my SATs. I have taken them twice so far (January and May). My results were not too different:
Jan: CR 640, Math 760, Writing 690 (Essay 6, MC 76)
May: CR 630, Math 780, Writing 680 (Essay 8, MC 71)

I'm not too worried about math, but reading is seriously bothering me. This writing test was a lot nastier than the last one, so I'll practice for that too and hone my essay skills. If only you superscore individual components of the writing section...

Anyhow, my question is how to improve my reading grade. I guess my scores are alright for a good deal of universities, however the rest of my application components are all over the place, and it's gonna be pretty unpredictable. Bringing my score up a bit is gonna help big time. I've heard that reading scores don't improve much, but is there some way to bring it up at least to about 700 by October? Thanks in advance guys.

I’m in the same boat as you… I got a 660 on reading I would love to improve it…I do fairly well on the sentence completion section but the passage reading kills me. I have just been constantly practicing the passage reading and I have slowly been improving

I think the only thing you can do to improve you SAT is to practice, unfortunately.

Practice, Practice and Practice!!! CR scores improve painfully, but you can manage to increase 50+ points if you do one 25 min section each day( On average) until October. Which books do you practice from?

Currently I don’t have any books. Thing is, some friends of mine in 12th grade do have some books (I’m guessing Mahdi didn’t have to practice his reading stuff since he had 750ish the first time).

Do you have any recommendations for books? Plus, what’s the best way to study? I’m guessing just trying to understand each thing I get wrong on those will help, but is it sufficient?

Thanks in advance guys

I think the best book for improving on the reading section is Erica Meltzer’s The Critical Reader. She has a good website with a lot of free info as well. @riwaldo is right, its going to require a lot of practice.

The best way to study for reading is to take practice tests, review the tests and understand why you made whatever mistakes you made. If you need to, go back to your books and if that’s not sufficient post questions on the SAT Preparation forum.

Yeah, CR is undoubtedly the hardest to improve. I, too, was like the mid 600s, but like @CHD2013 said, it’s all about practice, no other way around it. GOOD LUCK

I was in your boat before as well. I started out with a 630 and retook and got a 750. My advice would be to read more, whether it be non-fiction or practice SATs. Also taking it in conjunction with AP Lang helps a lot.
