My first ACT was a composite 26.Apart from the science section (22),I didn't do half bad concidering I hadn't studied or even familiarized myself with the exam.Up until today I was pleased with my score. Apparently Howard University will increase my original scholarship if my ACT scores increase before first semester. I plan on taking the may and June exams. The scholarship I want requirs atleast a 30 ACT score. Is it possible for me to go from 26 to 30? Any tips on boosting my score? I really want this scholarship!!!

What did you get on your individual scores if you mind

It’s possible. Do it.

English:27
Math:28
Reading:26
Science:22
Essay:9 out of 12
Composite:26

Did you use any prep books by any chance?

I used the princeton review and i got a 17

19 english
17 math
15 reading
16 science

do you have any advice on getting a higher score

I went from a 34 to a 35 in 1 year w/o studying. So you should be able to get a 35 without prep as well

What did you use to get that score!!! Any good prep books

It is absolutely possible to raise your score. CC is full of examples of students who have done exactly that.
Using the red book will help. I have used Kaplan and Barron’s ACT 36 preparing to take the test for the first time in April.
I don’t think there is a May ACT, unless it is a special setting for a school district.

Personally I used my education… If your score isn’t what you want it to be then work hard to improve it. I took a couple sections tests from the 1296 book if that helps. Seemed pretty similar to the actual test.

Isnt the Barrons ACT 36 book actually a good book becuase i just ordered it and wondering if it was a waist of money or not

It is good for strategies. I liked it. We will see if it helped in April when I take the ACT.
It has some practice sections in it, but no actual full-length practice tests. It focuses on the most difficult questions that the ACT will throw at you, so don’t get discouraged by it.

So do you think it gives good strategies on the English and Reading Sections because i need the most help in that than anything and do you think i should get it

I does have good strategy suggestions in it. You just need trying to apply them to actual tests though to see if they work for you. It has a very good English review.

Is it helping you alot when you study the tips and take practice tests

@neymar11 I didn’t study at all for my first ACT bc I assumed it would be similar to the SAT. I took and SAT prep class before but it didn’t help my SAT scores at all. I was unfamiliar with the style of the ACT questions and had difficulty with timing. I only finished half of the science :’(

But you still got a good english score and reading!! What did you do with the Reading any tips will be helpful

Well how did you prepare for the Reading part. I need the most help in that as possible

It’s critical thinking. Just read a variety of material, and take many practice tests and most importantly, review the answer explanations. From a 36er.
