Hi,

I'm a 9th grader ranked top 6% of my class. do you think its possible for me to barge into the top 3%?

Good question but how can anyone answer that? You can only control what you can do. Don't worry about the others, concentrate on doing your best. yada yada

I never even thought about my class rank until AFTER my college apps were in. I was 10th or 12th in my class of 200 in a competitive magnet HS. Did I care? Nope. Just focused on my classes and enjoyed learning. I was only one of four Ivy matriculants from my college, being admitted to all schools applied.

You have three years to move around..up or down. T26E4 is right. All you can you is improve yourself. You also have choice in classes. Does your school assign weight to classes that are AP or Dual Credit? If the answer is yes, then you have to seek the rigor in those courses. With that said, do not get yourself in over your head. Most GCs will tell you a high B in AP Calc is better than an A in reg Calc, but if you can't pull a very high B or an A in AP Calc, then go "regular." You have to honestly rate your abilities and see what works for you....it's time for school...so go to it...work hard and do your best and let the chips fall where they may. You can't control the students around you, only what you do.

^ Make sure you keep working hard. Most people (or at least the ones in my school) didn't really try their freshman year, and kicked it up a knotch their sophmore, junior, and senior years. If you make it into the top 5 percent, and score a 2200+ you have a chance at the ivys. Good Luck.

You can always improve, but like T26E4 said, only you are responsible for that. I have almost a 3.8 and am disappointed that I am only in the top 50% of my class but I go to a very competitive private Catholic high school. But congrats for at least being in the top 10%!

There is always a chance of bringing it up, or down. I am a freshmen too and most of my grade just got their transcripts so far and are upset about their GPAs of 3.2 or even under! Most people don't really try their first year in high school and regret it. You also have to remember that usually the work gets harder every single year and that it will get much harder to keep an A in every class.

Good luck!

The work itself doesn't really get harder... you just have to work harder to understand it. I personally believe that it's directly proportional. If you can do honors work as a freshman you'll be able to do honors work as a senior as long as you put effort into it.

9th grade ranks are the most general. Of course, it is easier to distinquish yourself once you and other students start taking AP's and stuff. They're right, worry about yourself. But to answer your question, freshmen ranks are least inaccurate and its easy to move up (or down) depending on how you do.

It's definitely possible, but it depends on the size of your school. I jumped from 11th to 1st from freshman to the end of sophomore year.
