Well my composite score right now is a 34, I got 31 E, 34M, 35S, 35R. I am planning on retaking and going for a 35 or 36 and I know I can maintain or improve my MSR scores, but my big problem is my English score. None of my teachers in school ever really taught the basics of grammar and I spent all of 7th and 8th grade English researching the Holocaust so I really need to get some help on this. I know I am making stupid mistakes like trying to remember if the comma goes in front of or behind 'but'. Anyone have any suggestions on have to study specifically English? I can do practice tests but I can't seem to translate good scores on an English practice test to a good score on the real ACT.

that book may be okay, but it's for 9-12 year olds....

a REALLY GOOD book is "The Elements of Style"

you can eityher get the book from a bookstore or just read the online version--it's the same thing

I second the Elements of Style - my daughter started off high school not very good at grammar and it was not being taught. Once she started caring about grammar we bough the Elements of Style and she has used it a lot the last couple of years when writing papers - her grammar has really improved. She also used the Princeton review to review for the English part of the ACT. English used to be her worst subject and the April ACT she got a 35 in English so the combination of the 2 books seems to have really helped her.

What in the world makes you think that? Just because it can be used by 9-12 year olds doesn't mean it's not useful for everyone else. I've known several adults who have used it to improve their writing skills, and my 11th grade Honors English class used it.

You got a 34. Take it and be happy. Jesus it ****es me off when people like you come on this forum complaining that they only got in the top 99.95 percentile.

Well if it makes you so bitter, keep in mind that you don't have to read these threads.

By a very powerful little book titled The Elements of Style by Strunk & White; we use it in AP English Language & Composition, and mastery of that book leads to an effective writing style.

yeah, but you have to memorize many rules compared to the Princeton Review's english i prefer that over elements of style if you are running out of time. princeton review is short, concise, yet very comprehensive.
