Improving in ECs and Grades

Hey. So, I'm applying to a few schools in about a year and 3 months. (7th grader here). I have (in 6th) two b+'s in Science and French, and one A- in math, and the rest, A's. I do rock climbing, computer editing, reading, writing, and Harry Potter collecting as "EC's" right now. This year, though, I'm going to do Student Council, Writing Club, and maybe yearbook. I'm also doing about 120+ hours of Community Service. My question is, how do I improve even more to be a more "stand out" and better applicant?

You had better stick with what you’re doing now, because doing as many different activities as possible doesn’t really look good. You should remember that quality is better than quantity.

You just need to do well in school, and participate in your current activities, and you won’t have anything to worry about. You should also participate in at least one sport.

By the way, collecting doesn’t really seem like anything special, so I wouldn’t include it in an application, and I think that you should explain on what you mean by “computer editing”. Is it computer programming, editing videos, building computers. You’re being very vague.

You look like a really good applicant! Definitley pull up the B’s to A’s though. Most schools care that you have extracurriculars that you excel at, so keep that in mind.

Hope I helped,

PS) Could you chance me too? Thanks :)

Unlike colleges, most prep schools place considerable weight on interviews and essays, so be sure that you’re comfortable conversing with a stranger and answering essay questions candidly and eloquently. Once you take the SSAT’s, you’ll know whether you’re a candidate at the most selective schools or whether you’ll need to cast a wider net. My son had a troubled academic and disciplinary record in middle school, but had great SSATs and ECs, and interviewed well. He was only accepted at one school, but it turned out to be the closest fit we were going to find for him. He’s a senior now, and his grades haven’t improved much, but things worked out well enough that his younger brother now attends the same school with a generous financial aid package (he was a much better student, although his SSAT scores were lower). Visit a variety of schools, to get a feeling for where you’d be happiest.

@RGrabigel-
By computer editing, I mean things like Photoshop and GIMP and whatnot. I’m not great at it, but I don’t suck. I just enjoy doing it. And I also do enjoy creating videos, though I do it in my Video Production class (one of my favorite classes.)
And I do do one sport- rock climbing. I’m also going to see if I can do fencing this year.

@ActressWriter-
I’ll keep that in mind. :slight_smile: And that is what I am planning on doing this year. I am 99% sure I can do it.
And sure. :)

@stagemom-
I’m actually a very good conversationalist. And I can write quite exceptionally. I am pretty sure that I will do well on the SSAT (at least a 80%, lowest. I’m shooting for an 85% or 90%.) I’m also going to be visiting all the schools I like this spring, to really get a feel for weather or not I’d fit in and really enjoy myself there.
