Improving my chances with and without rowing.

So i’m a junior in hs now. And I have a list of schools that I am well interested in and want to improve my chances to getting into them. My first SAT will be taken in March, my PSAT score was a 1710 but I hope to at least hit 1900 on my first SAT. I’m 20/125 in my class right now and my weighted GPA is a 95.5. I take all honors classes exc. for history. I take this year, US 1, AP Language and Composition, Anatomy and Physiology, Biology Honors, SAT Prep, AP Statistics, Pre-calc honors, and gym/health. Next year I am taking AP Lit, AP Calc, AP Physics/Physics 3, Chem 2 Honors, Art (grad requirement), accounting, and a virtual class. I am the vice president of my astronomy club, photographer for my junior class, in Student council, SADD/InterACT, and may join computer programming club. I did swimming freshman and sophomore year, varsity, and rowed freshman and junior year, and also did rowing for a club sophomore year. If i go through recruiting for rowing (my 2k is 7:37 atm for anyone who knows about rowing), i know i have a huge chance but i don’t know if i want to row. Cornell U Rowing and Drexel Rowing as well as Bucknell and Drew U rowing want me. My top choices for colleges are Cornell, Drexel, BU, and Syracuse. How can i make my chances better for these four schools? I don’t want to row but if i need to do get into cornell i will.

Get the scores up if you want to go for Cornell and Drexel. Maybe try the ACT and see how you do on it. Start taking them now.

Do you think a 2100 or a 2200 will make up for a bad unweighted GPA? @thedidactic

Depends on what “bad” is. You say weighted is 95.5. What is it UW?

When are you taking the sat? What does 1710 psat translate to? Of course 2100 will help. But how do get to that?

UW i’m like at an 87 gpa but i think after these next two mp’s (i dont know if all schools do it this way, we only recalculate every half year) my UW should be up by far @thedidactic

Honestly, I know you don’t want to do this, but all of the schools want “Crew”. You can get in anywhere with your rowing experience. I’m being completely sincere. Try to get in with your academics, but you will be asked frequently about your crew experience. Good luck!

I don’t understand. You said Cornell Rowing, Drexel Rowing, BU Rowing, and Bucknell Rowing WANT you? As in you’ve talked to the the coaches and they’ve seen you row? Or are you saying that those are the programs you are interested in? If you’re not passionate about the sport NOW, don’t continue it. If you are passionate but you just don’t want to play it in college, you can keep the sport and just have no intention to row in college.

Also an 87 GPA won’t be your friend in the adcoms office. Even if you had a good SAT score. They look at UW GPA first so fix that.

From the OP, I would expect:

  • the OP has filled out recruiting forms for each school
  • each coach has contacted him and/or seen him row
  • he has spoken to each coach, and each coach has offered him a spot

That is rather difficult, especially since the OP seems ambivalent about rowing in college.

What does the OP really mean? That he is getting emails from coaches? Or that he has offers in hand?

I agree with the OP’s last line - “if I have to row to get into Cornell, I will”. If your grades are borderline, call the coach, send your academic and athletic stats, ask about your chances. “huge chance” and coaching “wanting you” are two totally different things. The time is now to get them to ask you to get an estimate of your chances based on your transcript and test scores.

@rhandco @thedidactic Unless you guys are rowers, i must say the rowing recruiting process is different then any other sport and it’s more stats based and not like how a soccer player gets recruited, in the way that they don’t need to see me row, because it’s all about strength and stats

Anyways
Drexel rowing coach has reached out to give me opportunities and will be giving me an official visit when i’m a senior
Cornell rowing has reached out to me , might get an official if i get faster
Bucknell offered me money but i don’t think i’m interested
BU has talked less to me then other coaches
Temple rowing offered me money already

Crew is indeed a unique sport (we are on the west coast where it is not a big sport and my son was so surprised to get calls from 2 coaches who wanted to recruit him for rowing- he is a soccer player and has never rowed a day in his life but is tall and an athlete- I guess there is a shortage here lol!) It sounds like you have an in as long as you are willing to row in college. I would say your GPA is a little on the low side to be accepted to those schools without your rowing hook. Your UW GPA translates to around a 3.5, which is very good but a little low for those schools. Try to get your SAT up to 2000 and you would have a better chance, and also consider taking the ACT. Be sure to add some safety schools to your list.

I wouldn’t recommend doing a sport in college unless you are very passionate about it, and it sounds as if you are not. My son plays soccer at a D2 school and it is extremely demanding. There is little time for anything other than academics and soccer. He lives for soccer and is more than willing to do whatever it takes to continue with it. From what I have seen, crew is a grueling sport and even more demanding- if you are already having reservations about participating then it does not seem to be a good idea at all. Your stats will be good enough to get you into some great schools (if you can get your test scores up a bit) and even with merit money at some. If you decide to do rowing, you have a great chance of getting into your list of schools-otherwise be sure to add more schools to the list.
