Improving Reading Comprehension

For you english superstars out there, how can I increase my reading comprehension level and ability to analyze? Like, is there any specific method you follow when you analyze a literature? The answer doesn't necessarily have to be for SAT cuz thats not my intention; I just want to become a better reader.

Read more. That's it. You can shell out money for SAT prep books, but going to the library and simply reading is the best way to go.

that is such bs...... ive read so many (as the limit of x approches infinity) books and i still scored a national average

800 in math though

kenneth are you serious?

No, reading more books would be futile in your attempt to score higher on the SAT. The SAT is a standardized test and the only way to improve your CR score is to practice reading the passages and becoming familiar with what kinds of questions they ask. If you notice, they tend to ask the same questions over and over and over again (ex: What is the author implying when...; The word "word" means what in this context?..)

KENNETH BARF

I got a 800 in CR and basically just remember that the questions are in order of the passage.

The answer to #17 is between where you found the answer for 16 and 18 that will save you sometime

and kenneth I went to library and read my ass off u remember at Cupertino and I got 800

I agree completely with mirror and KING, and I also got an 800. As far as I can tell, most people who actually did score an 800 on CR think that reading is the best way to prepare. The next best thing, in my opinion, is taking a classical language at a high level. I had 5 years of Latin and 2 of Greek when I took the SAT, and I think it helped a lot. Many modern languages aren't taught with as much of a focus on grammar as I think they should, and the sort of analysis you do in those languages can help a lot with English. If you're just looking to improve reading comprehension, however, that's a pretty significant amount of wok. Reading a lot would be your best bet.

I dont care what anyone says hard work will always pay off

stop saying reading doesnt help!!!!!!!!!!
it does...but the condition is that you must read ACTIVELY
that helped me getting a 800 on CR, though i only started learning english two years ago(in 2004)

@regurgitatingcow: Do you mind explaining me what is "read actively" ? I need an explaination to see whether or not I've read in the right way.

I would say reading about 2 to 4 hours a day is reading actively.

Read with an open mind. Focus on understanding what you are reading. Don't wander off thinking about girls and sex while just reading the words with no understanding.

The last line up there is true for me. :) I can't help it.

Haha, thanks lil-killer129 for your hilarious response. I couldn't keep a straight face ;). You should definitely cease wandering your mind when reading or it will be a waste of time :D
