IMSA Applicant Class of 2020

Trueeee @caressmytoenails

And going back to what @rattybatty was saying, @javascript, IMSA places a lot of emphasis on leadership once you get here. It’s not just being the president of a certain club; merely voicing out your opinions and thoughts are crucial in taking advantage of IMSA’s opportunities. Showing that you can handle a leadership position and execute it well makes you a better applicant. Leadership is so important here that sophomores have a class every Tuesday night called LEAD.

@javascript Are you going to EIP on Saturday?

@lsutiger25 Can you help me with my application? You posted a lot in 2019 and seem pretty accomplished so I assume you made it in to help me. Your impressive GPA and SAT score in such a high place like Naperville is something I strive to be. Honestly I really need help. Message me on facebook @scottdu2003 Please im from Peoria at Dunlap and i really need help on getting into this school. It would mean so much to me. Thanks

Hi, I applied last year as an eighth grader and was accepted, so ask me if you have any questions about the process. B-)

So in the activities and award section it says "Please provide a list and describe your most meaningful extracurricular activities during the past three years. Also indicate any leadership positions held and time involved per week. " My question is that does anyone actually only include “the most meaningful” activities? Is there any drawbacks to including all activities (do you guys think it would undermine the meaningful-ness of the things that actually are important to you)?

In addition, let’s say you’ve been doing band for 5 years now. It says anything during the past three years, but I want them to know I’ve been doing it for 5 years. Should I just say band, band (3 years), or band (5 years)? Do you think there would be points off for not following the directions by including 5 years? I dunno, I just want to know what you all think and are planning to do.

@XxSwegLordxX yes, you? @corrjayna As for me I mentioned only last 3 years in my application, but if your band participation is very important to you and you want to mention 5 years you can, they will not panish you for this. As for me, I did not take band class this year but substituted it with AP physics. I just mentioned in my application my music related awards and scholarships, and music related activities outside school.

@javascript Yup

SUPPP CLASS OF 2020, GET LITT! ITS APPLICATION SEASON

@scottdu2003 is part of the class of 2019, he’s slacking and is probably going to drop soon.

tbh i hate @scottdu2003

Hello to all the new applicants! I’m a current sophomore, so feel free to message me and ask for advice! For admissions, it’s probably a good idea to fill out your forms and write your essays as soon as possible (I know a few people who rushed their essays and still got in, but it’s best to do them ahead of time). Also, try to submit your forms before the deadline, because last year the server was overloaded from all the applications being submitted at once and some of the forms couldn’t get through for a few days.

Everyone on here sounds really prepared wow. I didn’t find the 2019 forum until May when I got my acceptance letter.

It looks you guys want stats so:
770 Math
800 Critical Reading
670 Writing
(all from the old SAT)
GPA 4.0 (from middle school so classes were really easy)
I also did Math Counts and Science Olympiad, no IMSA programs but I heard they do help your chances.

From what I read, it looks like admissions weighs test scores higher for 8th grade applicants and essays higher for 9th grade applicants, but that might not be entirely accurate. I used one of these SAT study guides: https://www.amazon.com/Official-SAT-Study-Guide-2016/dp/1457304309, which helped my score a lot.

Hi everyone I was wondering if you could rate my chances
GPA- 3.71
Courses- Took both Algebra 1 and Honors Geometry simultaneously in 8th
9th Grade Courses- AP Chemistry, Honors Biology, Honors Algebra II, Honors Precalculus, Honors English
Extra Ciriculars- Was in the school newspaper, School Robotics Team, National Junior Beta Club, Science Fair Club, WYSE Team, Preparing for FTC Robotics
Awards- Science Fair Project Session Bronze, Science Fair Paper Session Silver, Robotics Competition First Place(State)
SAT Scores- Math-630
Reading- 630
Essays- Should be fine
Recommendations- Should be good

@ imsa '20 applicants… just fyi the things that they tend weigh most in your application are race, location in il, and family income because they have no funding. your actual application will count after that. (this was heard @ an actual parent meeting i’m p sure)
i’d advise having something special… yeah your math & science scores are important but if you’re an asian kid from naperville or smth you have to be more interesting than that (for example for asian and indian kids from naperville: even if you’re in calc as a freshman, have a good gpa, and a perfect math sat, but nothing really standout other than that, you’ll probably be waitlisted.)
your essays and english scores count for more than you’d think, so don’t forget about those. tbh i didn’t study for the sat and i still got in, so… lmao don’t stress too much about this kids, but i hope to see you next year anyway!

@ImmaLetItSlide i would just wait a year, until you’re actually a freshman, before applying. going to your home high school should also give you more opportunities - but pursue what you’re actually interested in! don’t just do it to get in to imsa, or anywhere else. if there are things you want to do that your school doesn’t offer itself, see what you can do to do it on your own. but really, there’s no rush and no need to skip grades. (another year is actually more time to save up money for paying for uni.) if you do apply, make sure you don’t have any spelling errors in your app.

how do i calculate my gpa?
idk how it really works but at my school an A in a regular course is worth 5 pts and an A in an honors/AP class is worth 6.1 pts. then you find the mean and stuff. my projected gpa for this semester is 5.73, so what would it be on a four point scale?

hi yes also my only STEM extracurricular is math team which i just started this year (i’m a freshman). what would y’all recommend i do because my parents just sprung IMSA on me and as;ljdfs;fkj;lasddfsaklj;j

@cringemaster Hmm, well depending on where in Illinois you’re from and ethnicity and stuff, that might be okay, but you should really look into finding some more stem EC’s. I totally understand, my middle school didn’t offer much, but between now and the app deadline, you could try volunteering somewhere STEM-y (maybe a hospital?) or you could do some stuff by yourself. I would say maybe try working on some coding projects at home, buy a robotics kit and experiment with that, or do a science fair project for yourself, and mention all these things in your EC’s. Good luck!
