@CoDeR360 Which forms of contact would you prefer I give you? I am okay with giving you a number if that is fine.
Thank you so much! I would have wanted this over being accepted. I wouldn’t have done well if I skipped 9th.
I got my letter yesterday, and was accepted! I am currently an eighth grader and wasn’t expecting it since I only got 1260 on the SAT. They probably focused more on the essays this year.
Are there any steps that I can take to better my chance of getting taken off the waitlist?
My stats were pretty good. I think my essays, recommendations, and activities were the deciding factor.
The most important thing about activities is to not join activities just so you can put it on your application. Just put activities you love and enjoy and spend time on. I play tennis, do 3 instruments, chess, scholastic bowl, mathcounts.
My essays were formal but were written sort of like a narrative. Use everything your writing teacher taught you (hook in your reader, good conclusion, etc.)
If you have a gpa between 3.9-4.0 that’s really good. Sat score between 11250-1400 is really good.
My teachers really liked me so my recommendations were good. Good luck if you’re applying for class of 2023!
@QuizBowl73 Do you know if there is anything I can do to improve my chances of being taken off the waitlist?
From what I know, there is a reason why IMSA didn’t automatically put you in the rejected pile and instead put you in the waitlisted pile. You just need to be optimistic and proud that you spent the time doing the IMSA application and actually did it and didn’t get immediately rejected. There’s something you have that IMSA recognizes and wants, but they just have to wait on those who got accepted if they actually want to go. If the amount of space that IMSA has to accept wasn’t a problem, then there would only be two piles: accepted and rejected.
So, I would recommend that you just wait, because you don’t know if IMSA might send a letter tomorrow regarding that you got accepted. Despite having to wait more and dealing with more stress, in the end, you’re either going to get accepted or rejected and if you stay in the waitlist, it can go either way. But, you need to acknowledge that you did this in the first place, which is what most waitlisted people aren’t really thinking about.
@CoDeR360 Would you mind sharing your stats?
@Pentahedrics Thank you for your insight and optimism! I guess we will just have to see how it goes and maybe I could get some more information about the waitpool when I go for orientation.
@QuizBowl73 If you don’t mind me asking, what was your SAT score? and which courses are you currently taking?
You’re welcome! If anyone wants to talk about anything related to IMSA on Discord, send a friend request at Pentahedrics#7221. I’m not an IMSA student myself, but I’ll be applying for the Class of 2023.
Hey, I know it’s still pretty early in the process of everyone getting their letters and all but I was wondering if any incoming sophomore girls are looking for roommates? No one else from my school got in (that I know of, at least) so I’m kind of in the dark at the moment!
@Nesryn Congrats on your acceptance BTW!
@Limelight101 Thank you!
700-730 is great! From what I have heard, people mostly score within the 1300’s overall, with below 700 math. And even if you get in the 1500s on practice tests, only 50% (around) those applicants apply.
For those of us who got in…what do you guys think about accepting the invitation and leaving home for something like this. Are the chances of really getting in to a college like MIT that much higher?
By going to IMSA, you’re not necessarily going to have a significant advantage compared to other high schools, but I suppose it can show to the admissions at those competitive universities and colleges that you’re from a STEM-dedicated high school, which can help out a bit in your college application.
@Nesryn hmu!! my best friend from summer camp got waitlisted, so if she doesn’t get off, i’d be more than happy to room with you!!
@enigmatic12 IMSA publishes a report every year that shows the colleges that all of it’s graduating students are attending for the following year. I am unable to put the link for this page, because you have to download the file, but just search “2019 IMSA student profile” in Google and you should be able to get it. For the graduating class of 2018 only 3 kids got admission in MIT and only 1 kid got into Harvard. A majority of IMSA students go to UIUC or UIC.
@brinaz03 Thanks for the offer! I was wondering, would it be helpful to start a Google Hangouts chat with some of the accepted applicants? That way, we could get to know each other a bit. Just a thought.
