In a predicament...

Ok here is my rather unusual situation.

I am currently an international student at NYU, and I have a guaranteed transfer spot into Cornell (as long as I maintain a 3.2 gpa, which I have maintained).

BUT

I need financial aid, badly - and Cornell isn't exactly the school most known for its generousity towards international students (NYU is worse I know ). Now, Cornell have said that I can apply for financial aid like a normal transfer student, so that is what I intend to do. However my predicament is this: what would happen if Cornell sees my record and decides not to award any financial aid? If I were a normal transfer student, then I would be denied admission, but since I already have a guaranteed spot, are they "forced" to give me some aid? Or will I be denied admission even though they offered me a guaranteed spot? Or would they slap me with a big loan and call it "aid"?

Congratulations!!

Because of your situation, it is in your best interest to contact Cornell and their FA department directly.

As an international student you may not be eligible for federal monies in the forms of loans and you already know that aid is very limited for international students. It is very important that you subimit your FA info in a timely manner and to be sure that you submit everything that they ask for so that your paperwork is processed.

The school states:

*Decisions about financial aid for newly entering international undergraduates are made at the time of admission and are not changed for the duration of the undergraduate program. Cornell has a limited amount of funding available for international undergraduates, only 10 - 15 scholarships are awarded to students in each entering class. The scholarships are either partial or full, based on the selected student's need. It is not possible to apply for financial aid from Cornell after enrollment.

*

*International financial aid decisions are determined after admissions decisions are made. Criteria include academic excellence, geographic diversity, and potential for campus participation and/or leadership. *

The upside is that you have probably been admitted to one of the land grant universities which means your cost of attendance will be less than 1/2 of what it currently is at NYU.

I would also suggest looking into becoming a resident advisor, at least that way you would get free room (nice cost saving).

Thank you soooo much for your response, it really clarified some things.
So what I gather from that info is that I will keep my place as a guaranteed transfer regardless of my need for financial aid, and any "aid" will be decided afterwards depending on my record?

(My parents WOULD be able to pay tuition with loans from my country if Cornell were not to provide any aid... but it would be a very heavy burden for them.)

Anyways, I will contact the FA office and ask them directly.

One more question though, what do you mean when you say:

The tuition doesn't seem to be that much different from NYU?

Have you been guaranteed admission to one of the NYS land grant schools at Cornell: Agriculture and Life Sciences, Human Ecology, school of labor & industrial relations?

If yes, and you are a NYS resident, then the cost of attendance is considerably less than NYU.

No unfortunately my guaranteed transfer spot was for College of Arts and Sciences. And I am an international student so definitely not a NYS resident :(.

Thanks anyway though :)
