Haha I know this makes me sound like such a dork, but I'm really curious. I'm bassist/vocalist in a local "indie" band, unsigned and thus not very measurably successful, but do you think this is worth mentioning on college applications? Will it help in any way?

Yes (in my opinion).

Generic students are boring.

What other musical extracurriculars do you have?

none- i don't even know the real musical notes, I just play by ear!

I think it depends if you're good or not

there's playing bass and then there's playing bass

Haha I'm pretty good at it, I just don't know what the notes are called. Our band in general is pretty good in the sense that we get gigs and we've done one or two festivals- would this make a difference at all?

send in a video, but you need to remember the audience because no tired 55 year old man wants to listen to music he can't connect with

and also make sure the song has a noticeable bass part. it's not going to help if the guitar player is getting most of the attention

& don't tell them that you can't read music

I don't see how it could hurt. I mean, if you're applying to a non-music degree, then it'll show you have a variety of interests. It shouldn't even matter if you suck or not, since it'll show that you like challenging yourself and trying new things.

it's sorta interesting. as racinreaver said, it can't hurt.

Yeah, it definitely won't hurt, and it shows that your passionate about something. It shows that you don't spend your time just looking at the wall. If you want it to be a bit more impressive to colleges, I would see if you could play at some local charity shows or something along those lines.

If you're not applying for a music degree, which you probably shouldn't be if you don't even know the notes, I don't think sending in a tape will do too much. But definitely add it on your application. You should at a minimum put it in your EC section, and maybe even write one of your essays about it.
