Should I mention that my family of four (older brother in college, younger brother recently passed) lives on a total income of $10000 in addition to living in a poverty stricken area? I don't know if that would be looked at in a negative light from the perspective of a top-tier school even though I have a pretty solid ACT (30) and GPA (3.7) as they may not want to admit an applicant whom they know will need a lot of aid.

Schools can also learn about your neighborhood from your address.

As to the relationship between need and admission, I'd suggest that you do a search here (and elsewhere) on need-blind admissions, and/or post your question in the Parents Forum.

Use your personal essay to be specific, honest and revealing about yourself.

Do not give the impression that you think that low income is, by itself, a reason for admission.
