In awe over FSU's grandeur

I recently applied to both University of Florida (first choice) and Florida State University, and I must say FSU is winning me over with its sincerity and correspondence.

About 2 weeks ago I had sent an email to an admissions officer at UF regarding some questions that I had, and although the response was prompt, its format was nothing more than a mere sentence with vague answers. I also got the feeling of irritability on behalf of the officer as they were a bit reluctant to answer very basic answers (yes, I know they can't be too revealing, but they can tell me information without going into too much detail)

On the other hand, I had emailed an Admissions Officer at FSU regarding a question about solidifying my claim for Florida residency and got a very sincere response telling me which materials were needed, asking if I had any further questions, and thanking me for inquiring information from the university. I also just received an email from FSU wishing me happy holidays and reminding me that the Office of Admissions would be closed...the last thing I received from UF was an email reminding me to pay a housing fee.

I understand that UF gets more applicants than FSU rendering it more difficult to send out these reminders to each and every applicant, but these little things are slowly beginning to win me over.

welcome to the fsu board. It sounds like you are having a similiar experience that my son had. he recently got accepted to fsu and has decided to attend. During our visit to FSU last august we met so many students, parents and FSU staff that were all so nice and willing to help.

We met with an admissions rep and my son followed up with a series of emails to her upon our return. we are from oos, so he had many questions about the college and admissions process. she was always so helpful and responsive. As a parent, i thought that if FSU treated “prospective” students that nicely, then it speaks volumes about how the matriculated students are treated. anyway, on the day he got admitted last month, he came home and on out home answering machine was a congratulations message from this admissions rep. it was so nice.

I am sure that UF has many staff members and faculty who are also very nice, but i know what you are talking about as I have experienced similiar treatment when calling UF admissions.

Also, you should know that actually FSU receives more applications than UF. I guess fsu just has a different approach toward interacting with students. For many, it doesn’t really matter. for me and my s, the fsu experience has been great so far,

Good luck with wherever you end up going. You eally can’t go wrong with either school.

Hi Melissa:
Welcome to the FSU board!

My D applied in the Spring and started in September. We were very surprised to be contacted by an admissions officer within a week or two of submitting her application. They called to see if we had any questions and to make sure we had all of her transfer credits (she skipped her senior year of high school in Washington for college) and in state status information ready to go once her current semester was complete. The admissions officer was so helpful and we were really shocked they took the time to follow up with us rather than the other way around.

She originally had UNC Chapel Hill as her number one and though she was accepted OOS there she chose FSU, in part, due to the efforts they take to build relationships with potential students.

Good luck and either school is great so you’ll be fine.

Melissa,

Glad to hear you are having a positive experience with the Admissions department at FSU. We have also found them to be very congenial and helpful.

My d visited many schools before deciding where she would apply. She desired a school that would give her a great education in her chosen field and offered an environment where she would feel most comfortable (since this would become her home away from home). After visiting numerous colleges and universities all across the south, she found her “fit” at FSU and from her first visit on campus it has been her #1 choice.

The right “fit” is so important. College is so much more than the classes you take - its the whole experience. If you’re not 100% sure of your best “fit”, I encourage you to visit those schools again. You still have the luxury of time. FSU has preview days beginning in Feb. and UF admissions status info will be available in the same month. So you have some time before you have to put your decision in stone. Take a look at the pros and cons of each university. There is no perfect school out there, but one should be a better fit for you than the other and only you can decide which one fits that description best in your eyes.

Actually, Melissa…FSU received 24,343 applications for Fall 2007 compared to 24,124 to UF in the same period.

i knew p2n would have the data. he’s amazing

It’s easy to find - it’s off the Common Data Sets for each school.

Ah, this reminds me of similar experiences that I had five years ago.

I applied to and was accepted at both schools, but selected FSU. To outside observers who tend to concentrate upon rankings and arbitrary reputation at the exclusion of all else, this seemed a bit of a strange choice, but I had absolutely no desire to attend UF once I toured there. The guides were arrogant and dismissive and the administrative staff was generally apathetic.

Ultimately, UF acted as though I was supposed to want it, while FSU acted as though it wanted me. Ego is a powerful thing, eh?

Bingo. My D felt the same way.

Thank you all for your kind welcomes :)

I did not know UF acted so arrogant toward their prospective students. I visited their campus about 3 weeks ago and it was very nice there, the students who led the tour were both friendly and funny. I admit that it ‘felt like home’, but I’ve not yet had the chance to visit any other college campuses other than UCF. Hopefully I will get the chance to visit FSU over winter break…it’s about a 6 hour drive from where I live :(

I also didn’t know FSU received more applicants, that’s very interesting. Thank you all for the information!

i agree with you after visitng over ten colleges i thought the FSU campus was magnificent, the most beautiful I have seen..The people we encountered inc students staff and community members were welcoming, and so proud of fsu . we were there during welcome week and the groups of the marching band were practicing. we shouted out to thenhhorns go noles and they played and recited a fuuny poem for us. the campus seemed so lively and filled with joy!

However I have visited UF -and to be fair —although the campus is not as pretty —the tour guides we met were very kind sweet students.
