I'm applying to several colleges; we only have one guidance counselor, who has just been hostile to work with. My transcripts were sent very late and my counselor simply decided not to complete the required common application counselor recommendation or the required Secondary School Report (in fact, she didn't complete these for any applicant applying through the common application). Our school doesn't even have a regular school profile, so colleges couldn't have gotten this information elsewhere. Also, one of the teachers I asked (months before the deadline) to write one of my recommendations failed to submit it (he did the same thing to several other students).

I've been freaking out because my applications are incomplete and I really don't know what do to about it... but recently, I've started to receive e-mails from places like Duke and Northwestern informing me that every part of my application has been received and that my application is now under consideration.

What does this mean and what should I do? My safety school accepted me without receiving all of the required forms, but I just don't see that happening elsewhere.

"Duke and Northwestern informing me that every part of my application has been received "

So… Are you sure there’s a holdup?

If you’ve confirmed that applications aren’t complete because of this counselor report, email/call someone higher up in the school system than your stupid counselor. This higher up person will help you, and understand that you can probably sue the school if the counselor simply “decides” to not fill out the form and you miss deadlines.

I’m just afraid that some school(s) won’t consider my application because they’re missing this information. I suppose it’s plausible that the schools with consider my application without this information… it’s just that I’m in full freak out mode about college applications anyway. I’ve only contacted one school (Emory, who said they would consider my application without this information) because I don’t want to hurt my application by coming off the wrong way.

I’m well connected in education, but the problem is that if I contact someone higher up, it will create a huge scene (though, it wouldn’t be the first time… my school just refuses to do even its basic duties and I’ve had to get the district office to step in many times) and they’ll just force my counselor to fill out the forms. Unfortunately, the counselor would then be really upset and if she wrote an extremely negative recommendation, I would likely never know. There are several other steps I could take within the school system (up to the removal of several school staff members), but none of them really benefit me in terms of college admissions. Should I call each college and explain the situation, or just wait to receive “you are missing application items” e-mails, and contact those schools?
