@scualum: Thanks for the tip, i’ll keep that in mind for next time!
Oh goodness, I hope that I didn’t close the door for Caltech with that little mistake, should I call him back today? I know that they don’t recruit heavily, but he personally returned my phone call, not an assistant or anything. Do head coaches usually return phone calls?

I forgot to mention, when this out of town number calls, they never leave a message. Since the coach may be traveling, and he doesn’t leave messages, is that a way for him to call me more without people follwing his trail or something? Can’t coaches only call so many times after sophomore year? If this is truly him, then he’s called 3 times, but only once from his own phone. Does that make a difference. Not to give away info, but the area code was (866), sound familiar to anybody? I think that this is a telemarketer’s number, but I’m not exactly positive. I googled it, and people complained about certain numbers similar to the one that called. Thanks for everybody’s help!

866 is a toll free number (like 800) - and you are probably right that it was a telemarketer. Almost certainly not the coach so don’t worry about that…

As for how many times they can call you, it depends upon what year in school you are. When do you graduate?

@scualum: I graduate in 2011 (I’m a rising junior), so how does that impact me? I just filled out Caltech’s recruiting form, but it appears that it is not sending. I mean I clicked “submit” but nothing really happened to indicate that it was sent (a tad weird).

@Batllo: I have yet to take SAT/ACT, but will in coming months. I am hoping for 2250+, which is easier said then done, but I’m a good test taker (self-studying). Here’s a link with the rest of my stats:

Update: GPA is now 3.93 instead of 4.0). My passions (narrowed down are): Inventing/car designs, basketball, and medical service. I really love where I’m at right now (work more hours than like 90% of volunteers while I’m the youngest one there). I will raise money for this cause next year and should have 200-250 hours by graduation. Also, I did not work for Chick-Fil-A as stated, I decided against it. I may work for them next year, but I WILL be on Student Government, high chance of Math Team, and was Top 3 at Spanish Culture Bee. Sorry, haven’t paid too much attention to that thread in weeks! Thanks for the chances! :)

At DIII, the coach can call you whenever and you can call him as well. In other divisions, there are restrictions on the number and timing of phone calls.

Recruits can call coaches everyday if they like, with the exception of two (?) blackout periods. It is the coaches who are restricted from calling recruits, so if they miss your call and cannot use a call to phone you back, then they have to either wait to hear from you again or wait until it is “legal” to call you. Some coaches will arrange for their recruits to check in with them on a certain day or time. I know my son was asked to phone a certain coach every Sunday night during his junior year!

hey, big dreamer, you said you are a rising junior?? I’m pretty sure that coaches are not allowed to call you until july 1 after your junior year.

Yes that is correct, coaches cannot approach ME. But I thought that I could approach THEM, or maybe you’re right? Hmmm, need some clarification. If you’re referring to my NAIA DII recruitment, the school’s president saw me play, told my dad I’m a good ball player, and why don’t I visit the school’s coach that Saturday. I was shocked, but I know kids in contact in 7/8th grade with big NCAA DI teams. It happens…

I called the Caltech coach several weeks ago, never spoke directly to him. I returned his phone call (I was vacationing), but I never got a call from him again. Maybe about that rule? I filled out Caltech’s recruiting form online, but it didn’t seem to get sent (page wouldn’t refresh, no message confirming sent form, etc.)

Cantwaitfor2010, what do you think happened? BTW, does your name inidcate you’ll graduate 2010, or anxiously awaiting the free agent class of 2010 in the NBA? :D

I’m graduating in 2010. senior year!! yesss. :)

… the coaches I talked to were pretty serious about the july 1st rule. they told me that before that, they cant contact you at all, except by email.

So, I wait until July 1st after my junior year I guess? Just perform on the field and in the classroom until then? Oh well, less stress for me I guess. Thanks so much! ;)

Okay thanks, I appreciate you pointing that out! I haven’t read that in forever, and recruiting took a back seat for most of July until now. Can I still call those coaches, sorry I forgot!
