In Dartmouth: but what might (have) be[en]?

Dart and Midd are very similar in many respects: they are located pretty close to one another, both have beautiful campuses, they have similar students (outgoing, bright, outdoorsy, diverse but with lots of preps and old money). Dartmouth is an Ivy League school, is more prestigous, and more difficult to get into than Middlebury, but Midd is nonetheless one of the top LACs in the nation, and holds its own against schools like Williams and Amherst. Middlebury is also much smaller than Dartmouth, and has no grad students (read--no TAs). Admission to both schools is highly competitive, even for top students. You can't go wrong with either...

Ultimately I chose Cornell ED and was accepted. Loved Dartmouth though I just think it was a little too isolated for me. Unlike a lot of weird people on these boards I wanted a great frat social scene which they have at UVA Dartmouth Cornell. I avoided all of the more intellectually nerdy schools like Swathmore because college should be about getting a great education AND having fun.

Oh, yeah... um. I meant in terms of location.

How far apart are Middlebury and Dartmouth? Is it relatively easy to get from one to the other? Also, do students from Dartmouth regularly go to Middlebury for parties, etc. (and vice versa)?

I mean, are Dartmouth and Middlebury about the same as far as getting in? Is Dartmouth harder because it is an IVY?

Dartmouth is definitely harder to get into than Middlebury. I know a bunch of kids who were rejected from Dartmouth but accepted by Middlebury, but I have never heard of a Midd reject being accepted by Dartmouth. Before I was accepted by Dartmouth ED, I was considering using Midd RD as a pretty safe bet, on the advice of my guidance counselor. However, they are both great schools, and the difference between them is minimal in the grand scheme of things.

Last year a regular poster on cc was accepted to Dartmouth but rejected from Middlebury. Not exactly shocking--it does happen.

Calidan, partial answer to your questions:

http://www.middlebury.edu/about/middcampus/directions/

KountingSheep, I'm from the eastern peninsula, but all of my family but the immediate part live between Oakland (MD) and your city, so I'm up there quite a bit.

I'm from Severna Park and go to Dartmouth... weird.

Dartmouth was my first choice and I've met quite a few Midd people at Dartmouth who come to party but never really heard of anyone going there to party. The party scene at Dartmouth is rather robust in comparison with almost any school it's size or in the northeast as long as your cool with frat basements.

This is essentially the relationship between Midd and Dartmouth:

Dartmouth (no explanation necessary :))

Yale, Cornell (Yale b/c of residential colleges and proximity to home - Cornell has a much better campus and isn't in a shady area, but it's far away, so they tie)

Penn (good campus and relatively close to home)

Tufts (I know, weird that it's above Columbia/Georgetown, etc., but its size, programs, location and people are more appealing)

Columbia

Georgetown

NYU and William and Mary (NYU b/c i don't like the campus and don't know if i belong among the stereotypical misunderstood misfits...but my mom went there, sigh. lol. and W&M is great but so far away!)

Rutgers (lol...i'm already in...but i don't want AIDS by the time i'm 20 :-P)

the rest really dont matter. the only reason i have pomona above dartmouth is because ive visited pomona, and california is beautiful. oh so nice. the order of things have changed so much over the past month or so. until about 2 weeks ago, i think dartmouth was #5 on my list. but i guess a good interviewer changes some things. there's just something about dartmouth, a mystical feel to it. its like disneyland to me. i just hope dartmouth doesnt crush me in april...ill probably only get in to one of my top 4 choices if i get lucky. so most likely, i probably wont have to make a hard decision, or ill be sad that i didnt get in to any of my reaches. any hoo, go big green!
