So I decided to take 3 hard-science classes this summer and found out that I made a stupid mistake. They turned out to be really hard. Should I dropped them and get W's? If I do, will there be a need for any explanation? How will that affect my admission, especially for top-tier UC's? I am so worried... did engineers get into any top-tier UC's with around 3 W's? If so could you provide your stats?

Thanks

You’re fine. “W’s” are just seen as withdrawing from the class and nothing more, admissions won’t be effected at all. The only problem is Graduate school, but if you have a legitimate excuse then its good.

Stats for what exactly?

Why do you need to drop all 3? Why not just one or two?

@lawlking
would the UC’s try to seek out why I withdrew from those classes or are they just going to completely disregard them? either way, would I need to do some kind of explanation for the W’s?

@UCBhopeful16
the stats of anyone who majored in cs or engineering and got accepted to top-tier UC’s with W’s.

They will see it and they will completely disregard it.

I have 4 W’s and got accepted to 7/9 UC’s (My GPA was too low for LA/CAL)

would it matter if I had a D or a B by the time I withdraw the class? in other words, whatever grade I had at the time of withdrawing does not matter because I will just receive a W on the transcript, right? And should I just wait it out until the very last day of withdrawing due date or is it better to withdraw now? Is there a difference? oh man, I am so paranoid and upset about the whole situation…

If you withdraw within the deadline, it’ll just show up as a “W”

However, if you try to withdraw pass the deadline, it will show up as a “W” + ‘grade’ that you had when you withdrawn

@lawlking
so you can still withdrawal even if you have an F in the class? also, later on would I need to provide some kind of explanation for the W?

Yes, you can withdraw with any grades as long as you do it within the timeline. And no, you do not have to explain why you withdrawn from the class. Like I said, the admissions office DO NOT care about your “Withdraw” at all. So, there is no need to write an explanation. Maybe for a graduate school if they deem it excessive.

can I still attend the lecture after I’ve withdrawn from the class? if so, do you recommend that I drop it now or just wait until the due date?

I’m sure you can still attend the lecture. If your professor is one of those people that takes roll or knows who everyone is in the class though, it might be a little weird, but whatever.

Just make sure to withdraw before the withdraw date, otherwise you are screwed and will have to work extremely hard to salvage your grade.

after i withdraw myself, that’s it right? like the professor doesn’t have to know?

Is this your first time in a community college?

Yeah, you can withdraw and that’s the end of it. Or you can withdraw and still attend the class if you want, without telling the professor; its up to you.

no it’s not my first time. why?

just curious, are you allowed to attend classes that you are not registered to? especially if the professor doesn’t take attendance. has anyone done that before?

Just because the prof doesn’t take attendance doesn’t necessarily mean that he doesn’t know who you are and might not be okay with you attending lecture.

And why stay if you’re no longer in the class? Isn’t the point of you dropping one or two of these classes to make sure you can focus on getting better grades?

I want to confirm this again… so if a person has an F in the class and decides to withdraw by the due date, there is no way for the UC’s or anyone to find out if I had an F in the class by the time I withdrew the class, correct? because, only W will be shown on the transcript, right? so paranoidddddddd…

what if they are all pre-reqs and that i’ll be planning to take them again later? would that change anything? how about the fact that all three W’s occurred in one semester?? i’m so worried…
