In general

Is a 2120 too low for a school like penn… 700 cr, 740 m, and 680 w with 11 on essay… hmm… blahh… im like hating myself right now… i gotta retake in october, but still 1440 just cr and m… is that too low… any opinions?

I got in with a 28 on the ACT (that was ED).

Ended up with a 34 but didnt have any bearing on my decision. Don't stress: your score should be fine.

I'm an Asian with a 2090 SATI score and I got into schools such as UCB, Columbia, Penn, Cornell, JHU, NU, and the like. My point is: don't stress too much about scores.

I really think that it depends on how the rest of your app is presented. A weak SAT score can be made up with strong ECs, a great essay, teacher recs, outside research, etc. I guess what I'm trying to say is that if the admissions committee can see that you put a lot of time into, say, research or some other major commitment, then it is understandable that you wouldn't have as good a SAT score.

Aww thank you so much everybody. That makes me feel a lot better.. You guys are right, sat scores definitely aren’t everything.. :)

One more question.. are any of you guys national merit finalists or scholars..? I think that’s what makes my score to accept harder, because I made national merit semi-finalist most likely (218), so would I be able to retake in October and still be able to qualify for finalist if I make say a 2180 or so in October? Do you guys know when the deadline is to give them your sat score to go on to the finalist level?

Also, How is Penn with scholarships regarding national merit? I know ivy's don’t give merit based scholarships .. but is that true for even national merit finalists and scholars?

Once again, Thanks so much!

I'm a National Merit Scholar, but I'm not sure when the deadline was/is. If you get it, the $2500 can be applied to Penn, but if you don't get it, Penn won't give you anything as a Finalist.

By the way, a 218 might get you a scholar status in some states, and in others, you might not even get semi. I'm from NJ, and the cut-off to get into semi my year was 222 (I checked the list).

lol and SAT scores really don't matter when it comes to college: robotFOOD up there got a 2090 and got into Columbia. I got a 2330 and got waitlisted.

mhmm.. maybe robotFOOD had a gazillion awards, number one in his class and journeyed to the moon and back.. lolol...

I dunno, all this college stuff, arg frustrating as anything.. and ya, i live in texas.. we are generally a tad stupider than you northeast people.. lolol, just kidding.. yaa our nm is usually around 216-217, so most likely i made it..

but even if i didnt, its all good.. i mean theres not that big of a difference between writing national merit semifinalist to national merit commended.. and besides 2500 in the oh so 38,000ish im gonna pay at penn if i get in.. i dunno how much of a difference it'll make, so its all good.. i guess... where are you going to go vieuxtemps?

Whoa! Faithful101, you sound like you have a lot in common with me! I'm from Texas and going to UPenn this coming fall!

I only made commended for National Merit but got a 2450 on regular SATs, so that's up to judgement. But, as for the $2500, a friend of mine went up for that preview weekend at Penn and said something about Penn not honoring her $2500. Go to the Penn website, under financial aid office, and e-mail them about it. I just know that when it comes to scholarships, whatever money you get is deducted from you financial aid packet. So technically, you will have to end up shelling out the same amount of money regardless of the amount of scholarship money you get. (That is, unless you can get enough over your aid packet.) Well, a little is better than nothing, especially if you have loans or work-study that you want to get rid of.

deedee, congratulations! I hope I'll see you at penn next year..

2450?! you mean 2350? 2450 isnt possible.. lolol Thats really awesome though.. how did you prepare for the sats? How many times did you take it?

One last question, what do you think really made you stand out for penn? Anything spectacular or were you just a well-rounded student?

Thanks so much!

Hey robotFOOD, is there anyway you could post your stats and tell us what you think got you into all those schools.
thanks.

yea im interested in knowing as well, robotfood.

Yea, I just saw a post by robotFOOD on the Upenn Official RD thread. His real sat score is way above 2090, dont remember it, think it was like 2230. Guess he was just trying to give us some false hope, lol.

Hey guys,

my January SATI was much better, but I wasn't able to get it to any of the schools in time (except Princeton, which waitlisted me)

The real score I sent was 2090 from the November sitting.

However, I also sent my ACT score of 33 to most of my schools (33 is comparable to a 2150-2200, so take it as you will.

The main point is... scores aren't as important as they are made to be. This is not to say that one shouldn't prepare for the tests at all. You should do your best to get the best score you could. If it's a little on the low side, don't dwell. If it's high, then good job. Just make sure your overall package is good.

I agree with robotFOOD. I got a 2140 and got into Penn, UCB, and JHU.

hmm.. ucb? wuts that..uc berkley.. im guessing?

I got a 28 on my ACT and an 1890 on my SAT and I got into Wharton and Georgetown. Don't stress your scores are good.

Faithful101,
Sorry, yes, I meant 2350! Haha! But, I think what stood out was probably my essay. I have this typical Chinese name, so I wrote about it and how it's caused lots of crazy events in my life. Also, it reflected me beyond the grades, stats, academics, etc. and really showed my other side!

**Also, I did this mentoring program and research outside of school.

Good luck and hope to see you at Penn too!

I got 600 crit reading, 640 writting and got into penn as an int student with full scholarship other than 1500 I have to pay + got into the Benjamin Francklin Scholars program. chill, SATs don matter as much

hey again! i'm actually going to upenn, and i am SO excited.

vieuxtemps,
Hope to see you there as well! What's your major? :)
