In general

lol woww.. i never thought.. haha this is great... thanks guys!

Go ahead and retake the SAT in the fall, trying for a few extra points can't hurt. Like everybody else said, that score won't really be terrible for your application. Also, don't be too confident about about being a semifinalist. I hate to instill fear in you, but I speak from disappointing experience. In my state, I was 2 points above last year's cutoff (at 215, above 213), and the cutuff ended up being 216 for my year. D'oh. Present a strong, complete application and they'll be happy to see scores like yours.

i'm majoring in biochemistry (and i am so freaking scared of it! lol)...what about all you guys?

p.s. see? everyone says that kings court/the high rises aren't social, but if they stuck all of US in one of those college houses, we would MAKE it social.

vieuxtemps,
I'm scared as well for bioengineering! Perhaps I wouldn't bet on much partying for the first year... :| But, ha! No worries! So excited to go to Penn anyways!

P.S. Woo! I think we'd make a rowdy group of science nerds...

deedee...

lol this is turning into a one-on-one conversation, isn't it? Anyways, I'm also expecting my frosh and soph years to be one long study session, esp. since I'm in the Vagelos MLS program. Hopefully we'll be taking a lot of similar classes...I smell a study group! haha

btw, what was your 1st choice house/did you apply to any residential programs? I really want Ware (even though it might be overly social...but that's why study rooms and libraries were invented), so my roommate and I applied to the Women in Sci/Infectious Diseases RPs to increase our chances of getting in.

ya, berkeley.

keep in mind that there are many, many anecdotal cases such as these where someone with a higher score didn't make it and someone scoring lower made it. but without a doubt, a higher score will improve your chances, and higher scores overall do have higher acceptance rates; though these applicants were likely stars in other areas too besides tests

True true, I will definitely retake it, but its good to know that this score isn’t the end of the world.. And thanks somethingsmellsfunny about that psat cutoff.. You're definitely right, i should be too confident.. Hopefully, I'll make it… We’ll see.. :)

vieuxtemps,
Wow! Congrats on the Vagleos program! I heard that it's really competitive to get into!
As for the houses, I mainly chose high-rises, which I think that, from seeing one of your other posts, you are a little against. I think that I'm probably attracted toward the high-rises because of personal preferences and I have some friends who have lived/are living there as freshmen. But, yes, I kind of regret not applying for the medical/infectious programs because I wasn't sure if I was going to go that route. I heard Ware is awesome, although the infectious program was a bit quiet on that floor--but, no worries! The new class'll make it rowdy! ;)

Oh Vagelos? I had 4 Vagelos friends during first semster. I think they all dropped it.

OMG! Why? Was it that hard?

no, they all decided they didnt love it. the kids get in are geniuses, but as Kumar says: "Just cuz you're hung like a dongkey doesn't mean you have to do porn"

donkey*****

yeah...my frame of mind right now is to go for it, and if i don't like it/can't make it, then i'll drop. apparently there are no penalties for dropping because vagelos doesn't show up on anyone's transcript until junior year anyway.
