What are the chances of getting in? I know the letter said they deferred 1/3 and plan to accept 10% of those people, but honestly, chances?

I was one of the many who got deferred. Kind of PO'd but I can pretty much say that I saw it coming, as the worst part of my application is my 4.3 out of 4.6 WEIGHTED GPA.

Assuming that my GPA was the only thing that got me deferred [2260 SAT, 700s on Chem and Bio, 780 on Math 2, fantastic essays (as per my UPenn Law friends), good recs, very good ECs (especially those pertaining to my pre-med major), rank in top 6% due to my GPA], would getting the following grades give me a decent (meaning like 20%) chance of getting in?

1st MP: 2 B's, rest A's
2nd MP: all A's in 5 APs

I think you’re nitpicking a bit too much. The difference between a deferral and an acceptance or even a rejection isn’t as simple as just the difference between a few grade points. Obviously getting a higher GPA will help you out, but at some point there’s not much else you can do other than hope that the person reading your app is having a good day (which is where I can understand your frustration). There isn’t anyone here that can give you a specific probability of your acceptance based on whether or not you raise a grade or two from a B to an A.

Thanks for your reply- I was originally trying to get an idea more like:
A) You don’t really have a chance either way
B) About the same as everyone else, 10%

I realize now that I got a bit carried away in making this thread, but I wasn’t thinking straight before- good luck to everyone.

The 10% acceptance rate for deferrees makes it really difficult to predict your chances, even if you get your grades up. I got deferred as well. I’m just going to work for all As on my mid-year report and hope for the best…

Your grades aren’t what are going to matter. I got into Pratt with a 4.1W, 3.7UW and my ACT was only a 32- my EC’s are what got me in. The main thing(and what I wrote my essay about) was I came up with this idea to provide free dental care in the bahamas and this idea turned into a huge deal with a bunch of dentists that went and provided free care for a week. It took a lot of hard work and leadership, but I did it, and thats what got me into duke. If you want to get it, find a cause youre passionate about and do something about it- then write to duke about that :)- best of luck! Hope to see you there next fall!
