My daughter is currently a senior in High School in GA. She wants to attend University of Georgia (UGA) or Auburn Univ.
Her interests are Broadcasting /Journalism. She has several EC’s
A few listed below:
4 Years varsity soccer
Debate club/9th grade
School club that focuses on campus and surrounding area beautification as well as community service
Well traveled, has visited 5 Continents, many countries, and over 25 states
Month long summer Ambassador program in Australia, included community service and rigorous outdoor activities
Television station volunteer program for summers of 2012-2014
Technical School Ambassador
Retail job since summer of 2014
She has taken AP human geogrhy, and AP world history. Accelerated geometry, accelerated algebra, and many honors classes. Also audio and video/journalism courses. At the end of her junior year her gap averaged at 3.3. She will be taking the SAT for the first time on Oct 3. This would be aside from the pre and practice SAT, in which she scored 540 writing, 520 Critical reading, 440 math. Right now she is taking a SAT prep course after school on Monday’s and Wednesday’s. I’m hopeful that it will help for the real SAT in October. Great thing is, we can try again in November too if needed.
Your thoughts and even other school recommendations. Would like to stay close to home, GA. Or even TX, our second home. UGA Is first choice!!
She has a good chance at Auburn, not sure about UGA they have really raised their academic stat requirements over the last few years but you can check that out on their website. What colleges is she considering in Texas?
I really appreciate the response! All would be okay if it turned out to be Auburn. Not really certain about other schools as I know Univ of TX would be even more difficult regarding acceptance than UGA. Thank you for the page reference as well. We will apply regular decision so senior grades can be reviewed and considered. In the meantime we will be researching other possible Univ.'s and colleges to consider applying for.
We’re thinking about LSU now. Out of state tuition has me a bit worried though. University of Alabama is on the list too. I’m glad our
It’s is growing being that she is interested in a few schools. Just not many GA schools other than UGA.
Some of the other larger unviersities that I have heard GA students looking at include Mississippi State, Ole’ Miss, University of Kentucky, U of Tennessee along with Auburn and U of Alabama. I believe UGA’s admittance requirements have gotten much harder over the past many years due to the Hope scholarship - it keeps many students in state that might have looked elsewhere otherwise. I believe as a result GA Southern and Kennesaw State have become more attractive to students and families.
Also, I don’t think Journalism will show up, but take a moment to look at the Academic Common Market of the Southern Regional Education Board; it shows where in-state tuition is offered at out of state schools in the southern region (usually for majors not available in your home state).
