In my final year and can get my GPA up to a 3.0 if...

Why the 3.0 hard stop? Because they can. We had such a hard stop when I was a manager for a large aerospace company and I would get from HR many more resumes then I had open positions (making the minimum GPA more like 3.3 or 3.4). Smaller, less well known, companies will get fewer resumes and will consider lower GPAs.

The problem with getting a business degree in addition to an engineering degree is that they then expect to be fast tracked into management. How can one expect to manage a technical area without knowing the technology? In many technical areas it takes 5 years plus of doing all technical work to get to know the technology.

In terms of why 3.0 is the most common, rather than 2.9, 3.1, etc., probably because the first digit stands out the most.

Thanks for the reply. Why the negativity of having a business degree? My son might minor in business or innovation tech or something similar. It seems people are telling him and me that an IOE degree with minor in business and of course CS, Opens a lot of doors. He had Java and C++ with some python and he enjoys it but can’t see himself doing it as a job. He is going into his second year . If this is getting to off track I can open another thread in engineering thread. But you mention it. Lol.

@Knowsstuff, that advice is because the business classes signal that the applicant is looking beyond engineering. Companies invest in engineers who are productive at technical work. Additionally, they want their managers to have a solid technical understanding of what they are managing. The exception to that might be IE since it is about systems, production, big picture business functions in the first place.

@eyemgh I appreciate your explanation. I think he is realistic that he is not going to graduate and the next day have a high end management job at the engineering company. I just think he’s seeing the knowledge base as a plus. My patient base is young and like everyone under 35 seems to be in CS or some sort of engineer or consultant for engineering companies. They all tell me this is a positive path to take for his future. He will see what Michigan advises over the next 3 years plus. (if he does a 5 year bs/ms combo)
