Hello everyone.
I recently graduated from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia with a Mechanical Engineering degree, but I moved back home to the Washington DC area and am finding it very difficult to find an entry level position. I have very good communication skills, a decent GPA, a good employment record with references and strong resume that was reviewed by the careers services office at my university. My major downfall is that I did my internship a while ago (4 years ago) at Fords assembly plant in Dagenham in the UK and my interests in specific fields of engineering have changed through my time at University. Sadly I was unable to organize an internship once I realized my interests were not in automotive design but in aircraft.
On to the current problems I am facing, I have been applying to jobs online and recently I have started to call local engineering firms to ask for any notice of employment that have not been posted online. I really would love to work here and not move far and so in this my options are limited. I am also not able to apply to some jobs as I am not a US citizen and or do not have security clearance. Most of the responses I get follow the lines of Thank you for your application
we have reviewed your resume and reference material
sadly you do not meet the required experience level requirement for this position. Should I continue on this method to finding a job?
I have talked to several of my dads friends who are engineers and their advice to me was to look for technician and or internships in the area and from there work up as I work towards the FE/EIT certification. Is this what you would suggest? Any advice would be most helpful.
Many thanks.
