In Need of an Admitted Engineering Physics Major

Which department (engineering or physics) is engineering physics based out of? The UIUC website seems to say that their EP program is based out of the physics department, but I want to be sure.

Also, can someone who got accepted into the EP program tell me what their letter of admission (from the UIUC admissions page) looked like? I'm positive that I applied for engineering physics, but my letter of admission says:

"Major and Department: Physics, LAS Administration."

Is this because the EP program is somewhat of a subset of the physics department, or did I screw up?

Engineering Physics is in the school of engineering. Sounds like you got admitted to an alternate program.

The physics department is a department that is in the Engineering College not the Arts & Sciences college (LAS). The physics major is coordinated by that department with LAS and leads to a degree from LAS. The engineering physics major, also in the physics department, is an engineering major. What you list from your letter of admission is not the engineering physics major but instead the physics major. It seems you may been given alternate choice and not your first choice if in fact you applied for engineering physics.

Okay, let me see if I understand this. The physics department is in the Engineering College, as is the engineering physics program? But a degree in physics is given by the arts & sciences college, while a degree in engineering physics is given by the engineering college?

So, since I’m accepted as a physics major, I’m in the same college (the engineering college) as if I had been accepted as an engineering physics major? I ask this because there is a required waiting period of 1 year before switching colleges, but no such delay is required for intra-college department transfers, according to this page on the UIUC site: [Transfer Into Physics | Department of Physics at the U of I](http://physics.illinois.edu/undergrad/transfer-in.asp)

I must have screwed up on my application (I can’t believe I applied for the wrong major…), so I’m going to do everything I can to get into the EP program.

Thanks for the help so far.

Are you sure you screwed up? There is a chance that you got into an alternate program.

Online when you checked your application status, did it say admit or admit: college reviewed? If so you applied to the wrong major. If it said admit alternative choice they just put you in LAS.

I just got admitted to EP (yay!) and yes, it does specify on the website that it is from Engineering. Chances are you got admitted to an alternate choice/made a mistake on your app.

If you’d rather be in EP, DO NOT DEPAIR. EP and LAS Physics are LITERALLY the same curriculum at UIUC, according to one of their advisers that I spoke to and to a friend of mine who goes there. The only difference is that LAS requires an extra semester/HS year of a foreign language – hopefully you already have that, but if not it’s not a big deal to take one extra class. U of I physics is held in high regard and their physics and engineering departments overlap to a great extent – you can’t have a world class engineering school without great physics to back it up.
