Warm weather and great school spirit convinced me to apply to Florida State and i was admitted in December. i visited the campus last spring and the campus was one of the best I’ve been to and i could see myself there. However, when i visited, classes were not in session and i did not get a good feel for the sort of people who go there. I do not want to attend an SEC school, and i fear FSU is one in disguise. How much does deep southern culture influence Florida State? What are the people like? Would Tallahassee be comparable to other college cities like Columbus or Tucson? Also, as an out of state student with no scholarships awarded, is it worth the price of tuition to attend the university to major in Pre-Med/Biology? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
To be honest, no, it probably isn’t worth it to come to FSU and pay full price to major in Pre-Med/Biology. That’s not to say that the major isn’t great- it’s a pretty good program that’ll definitely prepare you for med school or whatever your choice post-graduation is. I just don’t think paying full out-of-state price isn’t worth the cost pretty much anywhere.
There is a southern culture at FSU. It’s located in basically the only metro-ish area within a couple hours’ drive in a mostly rural area. Southern roots run strong in the Florida Panhandle/Southern Georgia/Southern Alabama area. Is everybody that way? No. Not in the least. But does it exist? Yeah.
If you want to be in Florida, check out usf. They have a good bio/pre-Med program and very reasonable oos tuition.
The city of Tallahassee has a southern feel, but most of the students at FSU are from south and central FL, which is more similar to the NE than the SE.
FSU draws students from the entire state, not just North Florida.
The cost of attendance at FSU is actually lower than USF, due to the lower housing costs. Tallahassee is cheap.
@SweetheartCroc but for out of state the tuition at fsu is about $4,000 more(+/-) a year
