So I got into one of my top schools (NYU), and unfortunately, it is also one of the most expensive, and they give me zilch for financial aid. I REALLY want to go to NYU (by backup being UCSB which I applied to just in case I didn't get into anywhere else), but my parents say I need up to $20,000 in order to attend. I'm a little late in the game for scholarships because I didn't want to do anything specific until I had an idea of where I was going; I mistake on my part. I've already gone through websites like fastwebs.com and cappex.com, but I was wondering if anyone had an idea of how I could get scholarship money FAST (like, by the end of April so I can committ to a school). ANY HELP IS WELCOME. I BEG OF YOU, PLEASE HELP ME GO TO THE SCHOOL OF MY DREAMS. Thanks.

You’re really in need of enrolling at UCSB - a great school that you’re lucky to have in your back pocket.

NYU is well-known for its horrible financial aid policies and it is extremely unlikely that you’re going to find $20,000 in private scholarships per year for the next four years. Not going to happen.

I know it’s tough to lose your dream, but start thinking about how awesome Santa Barbara is going to be! College on the beach! :)

It just isn’t going to happen–not fast or in any significant amounts. If it only were that easy. You can give it a try and fill out scholarship forms, but honestly, your efforts are probably better off figuring out a Plan B that you can afford for next fall.

Most college-bound kids have a “dream school.” It doesn’t matter if it is the dreamiest school ever in existence, the hard reality is that most families can not and never will be able to afford their dream school. You can’t afford a $200,000 car right now (50K X 4 years) and your parents probably can’t afford a $200,000 car, boat, extra vacation house etc. And while there are some scholarships out there, most are in the $500 - $2000 range at best which even if you won several of them, won’t bridge the gap.

The websites you listed are pretty much the best out there, so there isn’t a secret stash of scholarships that you’ve not found yet.

Congrats on UCSB. It sounds like a terrific Plan B from here, and I hope it or something similar turns up for you.

Even if you can find private scholarships at this point, whether through FastWeb or local scholarships you might hear about through your guidance office, you’re not going to hear about them quickly, and they’re probably going to be small. The kids I’ve seen who win these private scholarships do a LOT of work for very little return. A lot of private scholarships are only for one year, so you can’t rely on getting something for future years. In your shoes, I’d start getting excited about UCSB.

You’re not going to find $20k per year in private scholarships. Private scholarships are small and often ONLY for freshman year. Some also have a need component, and since your parents can pay $30k per year, that suggests that you won’t be viewed as having “need.”

Start liking UCSB.

Yes if anyone knows of scholarships available at this late date, please PM me so mt D can apply.
LOL.
Honestly Sean the only thing that comes to mind here are some memories of a couple of classmates of mine at U.Maine in the 1980s. They would take off in their cars for the summer for Alaska and seriously worked their tails off for 3 months fishing and had no fun all summer and earned SERIOUS amount of cash to take care of their tuition. I don’t know if anything like this still exists, but I think extreme measures might be necessary if you are going to find a way to pay for nyu. I think the UCSB solution is probably much easier.
bTW, you wouldn’t believe what their cars looked like when they got back to Maine in the fall
