In need of some advice

Hello everyone! I will be transferring out of a community college hopefully next year (2016 fall). The reason why I say hopefully is because I don't know how my current situation will affect me. I want to get into UCB L&S Computer Science. The CC I currently attend has no computer science classes that can transfer over to UCB :c How will this affect me? I took intro to computer science long ago in 2009 and currently taking another computer science class, but I didn't know neither would transfer...
My second problem is that if I wait to get into calculus at my cc, I will have to transfer till 2017..... I am really not looking forward to spending an extra year at cc just because of math. I am hoping my cc offers pre-calc over the summer so in fall of 2015 I take the last pre-calc course and then spring take Calculus.
I REALLY want to get into UCB and I am currently looking into getting TAP, even though my CC doesn't offer it.

If it helps, my CC is MJC. I have looked up on assist.org and the only classes that transfer are math up to linear algebra. Like I said before, if I wait to get all those done, I am looking at another year (maybe even a year and a half) in cc... :(

Looks like you don’t have other CCs near you. Try online CC classes <a href=“Online Course Finder – California Virtual Campus”>http://www.cvc.edu/students/courses/</a> for both math and computer science classes.

They’ll understand that you don’t have preq because it’s not being offered. An option for you can be try taking CS61A over summer at Berkeley. IF you do well during summer, it’ll definitely help on your application to Berkeley.

Hmm okay. Can anyone join the summer sessions for Berkeley?? If I only get up to Calculus: First Course done, should I try transferring? In assist.org, it says Calculus: First Course, Calculus: Second Course, and Intro to Linear Algebra can transfer over… By next year, I will be done with my IGETC.

@Chick3n‌ Anyone can take summer classes at Berkeley… even your grandma (I’m serious), but of course you would have to pay at a UC price. It wouldn’t hurt to try applying if you don’t mind paying the application fee, but it would definitely be best if finish IGETC.

Does LS CS require completion of IGETC compared with CoE CS?

By the way, thank you fellas! And I will try applying for fall 2016… Hopefully not being finished with calculus and linear won’t affect my chances TOO much…

It says to finish IGETC, but under there it talks about how it is hard to come by the comp sci courses for berkeley so to at least finish math (calc n linear) to be competitive… That’s the part that makes me nervous… It would suck if I have to spend an extra year at CC just because of math…

@Chick3n, remember you are going to be in a pool of applicants who will have completed the Math so it may very well affect your transfer chance if you apply before completing those classes.

Welcome to the struggle. 3 or 4 years at a CC is common for engineering/compsci/physics majors, thanks to the math series.

What a setback… It’s just that I have wasted my time doing stupid things and not caring about school… Now that I do care, it’s discouraging having to wait longer. I need to reach my goal SOON! :/

Went from x < 1.00 GPA (GED) in high school to having a 3.7 now that I am determined and focused… I wasted too many years and I really don’t want to waste time taking one class at a time at CC… A counselor told me that a CC near where I live sometimes offers both pre-calc classes in one semester… I could take that to cut down time, but it would still not satisfy all math requirements on time for transferring in 2016 fall…

How would transferring to a csu (after finishing IGETC) to take some comp sci course while finishing higher math and then transferring over to a UC afterwards work?

Again, thanks everyone for the input!

You only transfer once, at junior standing. Also priority is given to CC students over CSU students for UC acceptance.

If your CC allows cross enrollment at a UC or CSU while you’re still a CC student, you should be able to complete your major prereqs.

Also if you happen to be 24+ at time of transfer, you may qualify for additional financial aid.

@Happy2Help‌ thanks for the info. I will have to check more about that cross enrollment

And I’ll be 25 next year. I’ll look more into that as well.

I have been thinking bout it long and hard (stressing over the math) and if I have to, I’ll just get my AA and keep taking math until I finish while I work… I will still give it a try, and if I get rejected, then I’ll go with plan B. That extra year could give me time to work on some ECs as well. If I took more computer science classes at my CC, could I use them as “ECs” even though they don’t transfer? It could show that I am really interested in CS and really want in right? Just a thought…

Consider working as an EC, in a computer job.

What would your AA/AS be in? You can delay
getting the AA/AS and take CS courses at the UC/CSU that WILL transfer. CS is very hard to get into, everywhere. The more experience you have, the better prepared you’ll be for the BS.

i think you should take online computer science class at another school. When I attended the UCB admission workshop at my school, some engineering students have same situation when school doesn’t offer all classes for major prep. So they have to take classes at other schools even though they have to drive 20 miles! No jokes, UCB rep highly recommended them to finish all major prep. It shows how seriously you want to transfer to Berkeley. Especially when you don’t have 4.0 GPA, completing major prep is extremely necessary.

CSU Stanislaus is 20 min away from me… It was my original goal actually, but I didn’t want to settle for that. I think big and want something bigger. I’ve seen the CS curriculum for other universities and the one that appeals to me the most is Berkeley and UCSB.

I will just be getting a general education AA. My school offers an AS for CS, but I’ve heard that it’s not worth much so didn’t look much into that.Online CS classes are another option that I’ve been looking into. I looked up Diablo Valley College, but it does not have any for this upcoming semester.

I don’t have a car, so transporting around might be hard… I want to attend DVC to get those prerequisites out of the way.
