If you have written an essay or an article and have been published by a website or magazine and if you were to put it on a college admissions application how much would that count or factor in towards getting into a college?

It would be impressive, a factor that would be taken note of when you are evaluated.

By the way, it's "in regard to."

Thanks I've already been published a few times on one History site and I sit on the Editorial Staff of that same site.

... so your articles were accepted by a publication whose pieces you are in charge of accepting?

Not really as I became a member of the editorial staff after some of my articles were published.

o ok .....10char.....

It depends on whether or not the site is 'official'. Anyone can make a crappy site and post up crappy articles.

i think it really depends on the magazine/website...

Would this be considered "Official"

This is the History site I write for
All Empires - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

not to hijack the post, but:
does the same apply to writing opinion articles occasionally for a well-respected, state newspaper

Kevin Brown, the Wikipedia article says All Empires is a user-submitted, forum-type website. I don't think that's quite the same thing as being published, unfortunately.

It still couldn't hurt right? I mean it still shows that research and such was put into something and not to mention it shows you contributed towards something scholarly.

Yes, but it wouldn't count more than a normal EC. It's a leadership position, but it's not a hook or necessarily better than someone leading up a knowledge bowl team and winning at state or doing well as a varsity sport captain. It's unusual, which is good.

What's an EC? Elected Class?

Btw I'm also about to starting submitting work to another History website although this one is much more selective in terms of quality and scholarship.

Here it is.
Military History Online

EC = Extra-curricular

Yes. And I don't want to demean what you did. By serving on the editorial board for this website and writing for it, you have demonstrated passion in an area that you obviously love. That is the best type of EC possible. So please, don't take my words as discouragement. I really think what you're doing is great! A boy in my area runs a historical podcast. He's an incoming freshman at Harvard. ;)

What you're doing is amazing, and I wish I could do something like that. But it's not a hook like being recruited is.

I know who you are talking about!

Btw I get what you are saying, I think it's going to be very helpful come the admission's process as everyone looks at things differently, however I know it isn't a hook but of course nothing really is if you think about it?

"George Hageman?"

:o Wow, you are SO on top of things. Do you listen in?

Yeah I do actually!

He is quite good and his gradually improved since he first started.

See my PM. This is really cool.

So, you see? It's all a matter of passion. I would suggest that you clarify or explain what the site does and how you contribute, to make sure that the committees know the level of your involvement.
