I requested that my school mail my transcript, letters of rec, school report, etc all back in September....Today, my counselor called and said that because I apparently didn't request things early enough that they would mail my stuff out on Jan 4 (which as you all know is past the postmark date)....

Is this okay? I'm so worried now. My app has been turned in...will harvard reject me because of this?

Man that sucks. I would write/call Harvard and explain that the stuff has been delayed by your school, but I seriously doubt that it will hurt your application, IF your school really does send it out on the 4th. I would also follow up with the school on the 3rd to make sure that they are really sending it out. But I don't think it will hurt you at Harvard. It DOESN'T make the school look good though....

yeah...that happeend with my northwestern and duke apps.
i got the apps/essays/everything else but apparently they still havent gotten any of the counselor/teacher apps stuff.
even though the deadline is janu. 1st, you think the colleges will allow me to get the teacher/counselor recs after that???

hey, since it's the school's fault, why dont you ask them to send a note with the package saying that there was some error or school was going through a really busy period, etc

And, get them to send it by ups or fedex so that harvd gets it before the 10th. I guess it will really be ok since many international packages mailed before the deadline can take until late january to reach them!

lackadaisy is right. Unless your materials are ridiculously late (and sending something Jan. 4 isn't going to make your stuff ridiculously late), your materials will be processed along with a flood of other mail that it will take Harvard admissions a while to sort through. Harvard wouldn't reject a student because their materials arrived a little late. [Procrastinators, N.B.: This isn't an excuse to procrastinate further!]

I would ask your counselor to send in an explanatory note (indicating that you made the request in September). You also should also send in your own letter. While Harvard may not notice the lateness, you have nothing to lose by explaining this to make sure they know you were very mindful of the deadline.

Schools definitely give the things that don't come from you more leeway. Since you are not mailing any of these things, it's technically not your fault that they weren't postmarked on the correct date.

Don't worry about it AT ALL. I would follow everyone else's advice and maybe write an email or call to explain your situation. Have your GC enclose a note explaining why it's late, but this WILL NOT hurt your chances at Harvard at all.

My counselor already said she wouldnt send a note. She says it happened to a bunch of kids from oru school and she doesn't have the time. Our graduating class is of 800-somehting, so it is large, but I wish she woudl writ ea note explaining.

i don't think writing or calling is a good idea, imagine how many calls a day they get...you can't do anything about the lateness by telling them and drawing attention to it. they will have many thousands of pieces of mail and no one is going to look at the postmark unless it is super late-as in arrives the end of january....so just send it and don't say anything....all my teacher recs and secaondary school reports are going to be late and i'm not worried at all b/c it won't make a difference in how they read your application.

I'm pretty sure the admissions officers don't open envelopes personally
there are probably students who open the envelopes and file away the papers- I doubt that they even look at the postmark date, as long as its December/January.
Plus, they are waiting for some people's SAT scores and such, so they may not even get to your application for weeks or months.
Instead of writing calling attention to the fact that some of your stuff was late (when they may not have been aware of in the first place) I would email the admissions office and see if a 3 day late postmark requires a note at all

She DID afterall put me in the varsity football class when I signed up for dance... hahah Nah, I have no feelings of animosity towards her. Where would that get me anyway?

Admissions is closed right now....so I guess I'm not making that call haha
