I heard a rumor from some teachers and other students that this year, UVa is going to accept fewer in state applicants and more out of state in the interest of raising more money. Is this true? If so, is there going to be a significant drop in the in state admissions rate?

I did not think that UVa limited out of state admissions as much as say William and Mary, which is much smaller.

By limited do you mean UVa accepts more or less out of state than w&M?

there is already a thread about this…on this first page, in fact… and I think there was already another thread before that one.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-virginia/810365-wash-post-piece-increasing-oos-numbers.html?highlight=state+admission+percent

I think that W&M limits how many OOS students it accepts (I think that its OOS numbers are going to go up). I didn’t think that UVa accepted only a certain percentage of OOS. I could be wrong. UVa is bigger, so I don’t know that you could compare numbers.

the ratio, as said in that thread, is 66% in state.

while only ~10% of our budget is given by the state in return for maintaining the 66% in state percentage among other things, that 10% is still a LOT of money. the percentage cannot change.

Thanks for handling this one, current students!

That ratio doesn’t change, but each year, we run a few scenarios based on the number of applications, yield rates from previous years, growth wanted by the University, and other factors to determine the number of students we need to admit to get that ratio to happen. Obviously, we don’t just admit the number of students we need, we have to admit many more because there are so many good options on students’ lists.

The scenarios haven’t been run for this year, as we’re still a month from deadline. We’re already talking about what we’ll be doing, but we need to see those app numbers before we have a plan of action.
