In-State chance?

I am a junior and live in NC.
I have been home schooled my entire life.

ECs:
I have a working student under the UNC-Chapel Hill Equestrian team coach/PE Teacher for the past 5 years.

I have had 2 jobs since I was 15.

I was on my Church's youth Council for 4 years, VP for 1 year, I expect to president senior year.

I've been teaching beginner riding at a summer camp for the past 3 years.

I will be volunteering with a (large-animal) vet this summer.

I've bought, cared for and trained my horse (ex-racehorse) from the ground up with no financial help from my parents. I am very committed to her and that is where the majority of my time is spent out side of school.

I am taking classes at a local community college and I've gotten all A's (Biology, Chemistry, intro Sociology, intro Business).

My SAT scores are not great (1790, CR:670, M:520 WR:590 E:8) but I am getting tutoring and feel like I'm improving and will be taking the SAT again in May. My biggest difficulty is math, I am fine with solving equations but taking the word problems and making them equations is difficult for me, I always want to make it more complicated then needed. I LOVE Critical reading and my writing is so so.

I also will be taking the ACT soon and I think I will do better on it than the SAT. I also will be taking SAT IIs - Lit and Bio, I expect to do well.

My GPA is currently about a 3.7 unweighted but I am trying to bring it up before the end of the year.

Recommendation letters will be from my Trainer (UNC PE teacher/coach) and my Sociology/Psychology teacher (from the CC) both I expect to be excellent.

I will NOT need financial aid, my mom got her graduates degree and my grandfather got his graduates and pharmaceutical degree at UNC.

I plan to major in sociology or psychology.

Thanks to anyone willing to chance me or give me any advice!

No idea what your chances are, but good luck. :)

Thanks aigiqinf. : )

Any one have anything helpful to offer?

I’m not familiar with UNC admissions, but here’s what I would say…

Strengths: You have strong grades and have done well in college courses, you have participated in many things outside of school and sports seem particularly important to UNC.

Weaknesses:

Your SAT scores are below average, but I’m sure you can get them up. The first time I took the SAT I got a 1680… I took it again 2 months later and got an 1870 with no prep. You should go up even more. (Mostly my writing jumped from 530 to 640 randomly)

Home-schooled: There are a few issues with homeschooling, and I believe the average number of APs an admitted student to carolina has taken is 4.

Suggestions:

Preview the application (http://www.admissions.unc.edu/pdf/2009_firstyear_application.pdf</a>)

UNC highly recommends all of the core courses senior year, see if you can fit in a science course at some point… maybe this summer.

If you don’t need financial aid, consider a course with Carolina Online

I hope my advice is helpful; good luck.

I forgot! I am taking physics too next year.

Thank you for your input!

Just so you know, UNC-CH does not look at legacys or whatever it is called for in-state students. If your parents attended, it means nothing unless you are out of state.

Actually it seems that there is an advantage to being the child of an alumni. Check out this page from the office of Admissions.

Thanks, anyone know if I don’t get my SAT up will all chance be shot?

You’ll still have a decent shot, but:

Your Score| UNC 25th Percentile| 75th percentile
CR: 670 590 690
M: 520 610 700
WR: 590 580 680

Hey, your chances are okay…they’re not too strong, but they’re not bad either.
You need to imrpove your GPA and your SAT score, especially your SAT Score!
What do you (or anyone else reading) think of my chances? Message please!
