In-state community college transfers to Stony Brook, what was (is) your financial aid package like?

I have a low EFC. A 3.8 GPA from community college and a 2.5 GPA from NYU. Did you guys receive scholarships and or tuition refunds. I just want to see where I stand

You can try Stony Brook’s net price calculator on its web site, but it appears to have no provision for transfer students (it asks for typical frosh applicant GPA and test scores, and has no way to tell it that you are a transfer students). So you may want to ask Stony Brook’s financial aid department directly if it is usable and what to put in it to get the best estimate if it is.

Were you accepted? If you have a low EFC you may qualify for Pell and the NYS TAP Grant (or Excelsior Grant). You can also take the federal student loan. Can you commute to Stony Brook?

@austinmshauri Yes, I can commute. I was accepted when I had previously applied. I’m reapplying for next fall. So, I have an EFC of 100, currently. Do you think I would have to take out loans to pay off tuition?

Do you qualify for the federal Pell Grant or any of the NYS grants? The Excelsior doesn’t cover fees or health insurance, so it’s important to know which grants you’re eligible to receive. You’ll have to figure in commuting costs too.

How did you pay for the cc and NYU? Did you get state or federal aid there?

@austinmshauri

YES, I do qualify for pell grant and TAP. zMy question is whether with a low EFC, will the financial aid be enough to cover tuition at SBU? Or will I most likely have to take out loans?

And what is Excelsior grant? Do transfers qualify for Excelsior grant?

for cc I was eligible for PELL and TAP. And for NYU I had a two scholarships, PELL, TAP and I took out a small amount in loans.

Pell and TAP are need based. How much did you get for each of them? If you get TAP you can’t get the Excelsior. If you Google the NYS Excelsior Grant you can see the requirements, but you get either TAP or Excelsior, not both.

I don’t remember but it was a lot since I have a low EFC. My question is this and only this: can pell and tap ever cover tuition fully at SBU for transfers? @austinmshauri

How much are tuition and fees at Stony Brook? Full Pell is something like ~$5900. I think TAP is about $5k. But whether or not transfers get the full amount depends on their individual situations.
