In state, early decision chances

I live in state and go to a competitive high school. I'm in the top 7% of my class, which has well over 400 students. I have taken 7 AP classes all of high school. My cumulative GPA is 4.77 (3.9/4.0). My SAT is my only bad part- i got a 1850. I already applied early action and don't have time to retake it again. However, my ec's are really good (girl scout, sports, church activities, mission trips, etc.)

Looking at your SAT score, you’re a little above the 25th percentile for UNC. I believe the new 25 percentile is an 1810. Since you are in state I’m sure you will still be considered with a good chance. I did not see any leadership roles in your EC’s, which will hurt you. Your GPA though is really well, but your SAT scores does not show that. UNC will think that your school is to easy if you can have a high sat score, but a decent SAT score. I do not think you can retake the SAT again since they only accept up to November SAT test dates for early action. But overall it is a high reach-reach for you.

Very low reach. First poster doesn’t know what they are talking about. IN STATE

i hope the second poster is right! I wish I had taken the ACT but it’s too late now. My guidance counselor thinks I’ll be fine since I’m in state. Oh and I have leadership roles for my bronze/gold award in Girl Scouts, I am on the leadership team at church/teach Sunday school, and I tutor hispanic children.
Any other opinions?

As they mentioned you’re around the 25th-35th percentile for your SATs even for instate applicants.

Your UW is a 3.9 and weighted a 4.77 and you are still only top 7%? That must be a competitive HS. Maybe you didn’t take enough AP/IBs compared with other students in your class?

What county are you from? Wake? Mecklenburg?

Being in the top 10% is huge in admissions but for really arbitrary reasons (college rankings that use % of students in top 10%).

I think you have a chance though I can’t say definitively one way or the other.

Yeah my high school is very competitive. I will have taken 7 APs throughout high school and made all A’s and two B’s (freshman year) but since it’s so competitive, that still makes me only top 7%. I’m from Forsyth county. My school always has a very high number of students that go to UNC Chapel Hill.

any other opinions?

If you wrote good essays, I think you’re fine. They stress that they look at your application holistically, which means that one score will not make or break you. Being as GPA is more important than SAT in the admissions process, I’m guessing you will be accepted.

Why do people keep asking if an applicant is from Wake or Mecklenburg? I thought all in-state applicants are considered equally no matter what county you live in?

Wake and Mecklenburg are generally considered to have the best school systems in the state, and generally have a lot of top in state applicants. Being in the top 10% in one of those counties is generally more competitive than in some of the more rural areas of the state. That’s a pretty huge generalization - there are great schools all over the state and top students from very rural areas, but Wake and Mecklenburg are the most represented counties at UNC. I’m a freshman from Cary, and I swear that half the in state friends I have are either from Wake or Mecklenburg.
