Our college counselor just told us that UMCP wants all MD students to apply priority? Is that true?
I'm applying to Maryland as a safety, but I don't think I'll have time to finish the app by Nov. 1 since it's pretty long and I'm applying EA to a bunch of other places.
Can I apply RD? Or should in-state students never apply regular?

In state or not, anyone who wants to be accepted should apply by November 1st. If you consider this a safety school, then your stats must be quite good, and you will want to apply priority to be considered for scholarships.

MDmom, why is that? that’s what I’m not understanding. what’s the point of even having the January deadline if that’s the situation?

@saman, … I applied to Maryland as a safety also. When I applied, I had NO intention of matriculating here, … but here I am. I was accepted at some of the finest schools in the country, but Maryland is “paying me” to attend; an offer I couldn’t refuse. If your stats are great, then it could happen to you, but only if you make the Nov. 1st deadline. Good luck.

Saman, I know it’s aggravating and confusing. November 1 is very early and a tough deadline to make, plus the application is time-consuming. Plumazul’s statement represents a lot of people I know who had their sights set on other schools but chose Maryland over a mountain of debt. Plus, Maryland’s Honors and Scholars programs make the university a very attractive option, and you will need to apply by Nov. 1 to be considered. Thank your counselor for giving you the priority deadline information, because many schools don’t do this.

If you don’t apply by Nov 1, there’s a larger chance of you being deferred to the Spring semester or just plain rejected.

The admision of UMCP said and repeated many times “Apply by Nov 1”. We should believe them.

Plumazul,
Your situation is the dream of many kids in Maryland, I do not think my kid can get that, but for just a dream, can you tell us more detailed info.
- For “Maryland is paying me to attend”, is it Banneker/Key scholar?
- How great is the stat to get that? SAT, ACT, GPA, EC …etc…
- Do you regret to decline some of the finest schools in the country? I think of course NOT, so the important question is Why ? Please.
Thank you very much.

@Rookie,

I am a full B/K, MDS, and NMS. I receive the published COA. So after tuition/room/board/books/fees are paid by my scholarships, I get a check every semester.

at first I was concerned. But I love it here now. One big plus is Maryland’s policy on AP credit. At my other choices, I would have been forced to retake many of the intro courses for which I had AP credit since they cap the amount of credit you can use. Here at Maryland there is no cap, so I will be a “senior” next semester (my fourth) and will take many more advanced courses than I would have had time to take elsewhere. I also had fears that Maryland might limit my options(such as summer research) but this has proven not to be true. I could not be happier.

Thank you for your info.

I definitely think you should apply early if you can. As an in-state student applying early, you’ll have priority for the honor’s program at MD and any scholarships you may qualify for. These are both excellent opportunities for you and may make UMD a really attractive option for your college career. Why limit your options? The Maryland application isn’t THAT long… Unless you are waiting until the last minute to do it.

It isn’t just a matter of priority. **If you do not apply by the priority deadline, you will be ineligible for the Honors College or College Park Scholars or any kind of merit aid. ** And besides that, many of the slots in the freshman class will have been given away by the time they act on your application.
