In state status?

My daughter is applying to UVA. We live in Maryland but I work in Virginia. I'm part owner of a professional service corporation based in Virginia and I pay Virginia income tax based on K-1 profits (not W-2 earnings income). Does anyone know if this would qualify her for in state status for either admissions or tuition? Thanks in advance for any input.

This is a thorny issue that is taken very seriously by the administration at every public school. I suggest that you contact the Office of Admissions and ask to speak to someone about residency issues.

Of course, it's entirely up to the admissions office, so I'm no expert, but my family had a similar situation. My dad had just moved to Virginia a few months before I applied because he got a job in Maryland (so it's kind of the opposite of you, I guess), and because he was living in Virginia, we were awarded In-state tuition, even though I live in Illinois. For your situation, I would say that your daughter would not be considered for in-state tuition and will not be considered as an in-state student. The no for the tuition is because you don't actually live in Virginia and pay property taxes there. She won't be considered as an in-state student mostly because she doesn't go to school in Virginia, and can't be compared with the students who go to school in Virginia. However, this is just my perspective, based on what I went through last year, and I may be wrong. Certainly, this should not discourage her from applying, as you will only find out whether or not she will get in-state tuition after she is accepted, assuming she gets in. Hope this post helps!

The decision isn't up to the Office of Admission. There's an Office of Virginia Status that reviews all the Request for Virgnia Status forms. A lawyer reviews the documentation and lets us know if a student is a Virginian.

Thanks to all of you.

Dean J, do you have an address of someone at the Office of Virginia Status whom I could contact for more information. Thanks in advance.
