In-state tuition for 2 states?

So my parents are separated, but not divorced. I currently live with my mother in NY while my father lives in CA. If I apply to a school in CA, say UCLA, am I able to pay in-state tuition because my father lives there (I've also heard that this might vary because of different school policies)?

Ask the CA schools you wish to apply to. I think they’ll say that the HS you attended would be an important consideration, as would the state of the custodial parent.

It depends on the state. My daughter had a friend who lived in one State with her Dad (and graduated HS from there) but also qualified for instate tuition in the State her Mom lived in and ended up going to college there. You would have to check the rules for CA.

I think there was a family friend whose dad was in Taiwan and mom was in California. Since colleges know that some families have separated parents they had spaces for addresses of both parents. He answered truthfully, and, as a result, I think his tuition was averaged between the amount one has to pay in-state and the amount that one has to pay out-of-state.

What state will you graduate hs from?
What state is your mother (the custodial parent) a resident of?
How long has your father been a resident of CA?
These are some of the questions Admissions will ask.
