Is anyone aware of a list, or where I can find information on colleges/universities that offer in-state tuition for MT and/or academics, or ‘sister’ state initiatives? If not, perhaps we can start one here? THANKS!
I think there is one somewhere. Maybe @EmsDad can find it. Two schools that do offer in state tuition to MTs that come to mind are Texas State and Montclair.
Thanks @MTDadandProud . I don’t recall seeing one, but I was thinking the same…that @EmsDad might have some insight!
To add to my previous post, I think Florida State can get you pretty close to in state tuition as an MT if you have good grades.
Also Missouri State
@MTDadandProud , you were correct, & I think I found the old thread re: this discussion. I’ve read through the posts on that thread, and here’s the schools mentioned that offer at least some $, if not full in-state… Some are for MT, some for academics & some for ‘sister states’. If there are more, please add to the list.
Academic Common Market States
Ball State
Coastal Carolina
Florida State
Michigan State
Missouri State
Montclair
Texas State
University of Alabama
University of Central Florida
Western Illinois University
Western Michigan
Some clarifications:
At Utah, students may qualify as in-state after Freshman year if you stay over the summer and meet some other qualifications.
Western Michigan used to offer in-state if you went to summer school but now has lowered OOS tuition to only 25% more than in-state, so they cancelled the in-state summer qualification.
Florida State offers 1/2 tuition waver for OOS students, and high merit students can qualify for in-state or even full tuition wavers.
Some schools with solid MT programs and low OOS tuition include:
Western Michigan $14,699
Wisconsin Stevens Point $16,498
Western Carolina $17,584
Wright State $17,608
All of these schools also offer academic merit aid for good grades and test scores:
Western Michigan: 8.4% of freshman receive an average of $6,060
Wisconsin Stevens Point: 5.3% of freshman receive an average of $1,411
Western Carolina: 4.1% of freshman receive an average of $5,031
Wright State: 17.2% of freshman receive an average of $4,892
South Dakota is rarely mentioned on this forum but has a really low OOS tuition: $12,020
@EmsDad Thank you! I knew you’d have some insight on this. And thank you for all of the stats on other items! I have found them to be extremely beneficial in trying to help my son piece together this journey!
You may want to check on Coastal. I believe they only offer in state tuition if you are studying a degree not offered in your state, if you state is part of the academic common market. So, for example, you can get a BFA Physical Theatre degree at Coastal, one of the only places in the US to offer that degree. If you’re from TN, and TN is part of the academic common market, and no school in TN offers that degree, you then can qualify for in state tuition. But you have to go to school for that specific degree. I do not believe it applies to the MT or Acting degrees. But their policies may have changed so please check with them.
State universities in Oklahoma offer some OOS tuition reductions for students from neighboring states.
Wyoming has low OOS tuition and Rocky Mtn Scholars to bring that down even more.
Here are some (mostly Eastern) public BFA-MT colleges on my D’s list because they offer OOS tuition waivers/merit scholarships for moderate GPAs/test scores: Wright State, Southern Illinois University/Carbondale (actually they don’t have OOS any more), Austin Peay, University of Montevallo (Al), Missouri State, Ball State, Montclair, UW Stevens Point.
Others I found (but did not end up her list for various other reasons): University of Alabama Birmingham, Memphis State, Western Kentucky and Northern Kentucky (audition 2nd year I think), Southeast Missouri, Kent State (I think only partial OOS waiver), and I think I remember Central Arkansas (or maybe Western?), West Virginia (I think the GPA required was a little higher there), Youngstown State, Central Michigan. And most universities seem to offer OOS waivers to at least some of their border states.
Hope that helps somebody. Took a lot of research to find!
Forgot to mention: pretty much all the Texas state universities, and Central Oklahoma, and Wichita State.
@catznpigz Does Alabama Birmingham offer in state tuition? Or if not, what is the exact financial offer from them? Thanks
that is correct for Coastal Carolina. they are part of the Academic common market, having reciprocity with states that do not offer an MT BFA. then you get in state tuition. Also I believe Western Kentucky is audition 2nd year, not Northern Kentucky. My D auditioned at NKU right out of high school.
@Notmath1 , Looks like UAB doesn’t call them OOS tuition waivers, but offers higher merit scholarships for OOS folks. For my daughter’s GPA/SAT level, for instance, $12,000 out of state versus $5500 in state. On website under financial aid/scholarships/ ACT & GPA-Based Scholarships for Out-of-State Students. UAB was one that doesn’t give Freshman scholarships for folks who are not in high school when applying, however, which is why it came off my D’s list. (I found that out by emailing the admissions folks last year.)
Temple (if you apply early and have good grades) offers scholarships to OOS students that make the tuition (at least in our case) even cheaper then in state tuition. Crazy amounts of scholarship were offered. But if you apply late, scholarships are all gone…
ooops sorry for the duplicate post.
Starting in the fall WCU will be part of NC promise and the out of state tution r&b and fees is under $10K
