In state vs Out of State? Unfair?

I just want to know how important it is if going to a better school. Like is it worth paying 30 grand more per year to go to a better out of state school than to go nearly free instate? Also, if going to better schools is better, than wouldn’t people from N Carolina benefit more because they pay in state and have super high chance of getting into UNC? compared to someone who has average instate schools?

I think unless the OOS school has a major that your in-state flagship lacks – and you are strongly drawn to that major – that it’s probably better to stay in-state and save the $100,000 (or however much the price difference is).

If you get a financial award from the OOS school to make its price more competitive, you can evaluate whether the perceived difference in quality/rep/fit is worth the (closer) price difference.

Nope stay instate.

Not unfair.

Can you expand on that?

State money pays for state schools for state residents. The primary purpose of the state schools is to educate state residents, and therefore allocate most spots to state residents. If you happen to live in a state where the state flagship has really distinguished itself, consider yourself lucky, but it can still be challenging to get accepted.
