In state vs. Out of state

In the acceptances in the official decisions thread, I've been seeing a lot of kids from Cali getting accepted... is it a lot tougher to get in if you're from out of state, or is it basically the same?

Comparer to other colleges, out of staters have it realtively easy. They are about 50-50, I believe.

This is a private university...they have nothing to gain or lose from giving preference to in-staters.

i think that even though usc is a private university, they would be trying to increase their geographic diversity - the same way that a kid from alaska or wyoming would have an advantage in admissions to most colleges, an out of stater may have an advantage at usc. another explanation may be that usc just isn't that popular outside of california.

The 2005 Freshman Class Profile states:

51% California
41% Other U.S.
08% Outside of U.S.
