In terms of academic difficulty, is CAL easier or harder than you expected it to be?

Coming in from high school, that is.

Just wondering.

Overall, just about how I expected. Some classes are super easy. Others are rather difficult. I’d say it’s pretty balanced.

It’s actually a lot easier than I expected, but that’s not to say it is easy in general. I think you still have to work hard to get good grades, but just that I expected much, much harder work.

definitely harder than I’d anticipated in my wildest dreams. i mean, id ralized Cal had a reputation for academic superiority and a competitive nature for certain departments, but somehow Id just figured if I was at the top of my HS, success in college would come as long as I put in the time. but i feel like for some it works out the same amount of time and efforts just gets them results and for others just as much time and efforts wont necessarily get the same results-which is where i guess “natural” smarts come in.

two more years till i have my degree. woot!

Harder, but I came in with low expectations.

way easier. I came from a high school that was not that competitive (we average about 10 people accepted to berkeley a year, maybe like 500 class size?). Everyone kept saying how they expected to do hella well here and got owned. But it only feels a little bit harder than high school.

easier… I kept on hearing how people just were dropping out and failing. But I ended up doing better here than in high school. =___= Then again, I came from a pretty competitive HS (50-60 accepted to Berkeley).

it’s about 256 times harder than you actually think it is.

Easier in terms of the workload but harder tests. or impossible tests. lol jk but the tests for my science class was realllllyyyy hard. to the point where i knew i should be worried but i didn’t care. because i studied. and tried. but everyone thought it was hard. classes that aren’t in hard majors (science, etc.) are generally easy to get an A or B in.

This would be more useful if people posted their major/classes

I’m a CS major.
Math 53 was a lot easier than I thought it would be (the exam avg was a 77, which is pretty high). 61A is interesting. The exams are really easy (so far at least, I hear it gets harder) but the homework from the wizard book can get really tough. Econ is … strange. Brad Delong is changing the curriculum and is very inconsistent. Our Econ problem sets have very little to do with what is taught in lecture and our discussion sections are simply more lecture time and not actual discussion. Many found the midterm hard (the avg was a 50 in my section) but compared to my CS/Math class, econ is a lot easier and doesn’t require much time.

I’ve been getting my ass kicked here since day one- I love it!!

easier to get a B or pass if you try. relatively harder to get an A.

harder.

My high school was supposed to be really hard, but was nothing compared to Berkeley lol.

MCB/Econ double major.

Bigger workload (papers, CS projects, problem sets), but much much easier than high school because of curved or scaled grades …

"easier to get a B or pass if you try. relatively harder to get an A. "

YES! This describes all Cal grading to me especially since I’m in Haas. It’s easy to study hard and get a B (since usually 50%+ will get some B in a Haas curve) . Getting an A requires luck or knowing more than the next guy.

Yeah, exactly. Just be happy with a B because it’s basically an A (at least in my mind). I mean, you’ll still get into good colleges because they all know what the grading scale is like. In my opinion, you have just as good of a chance getting a 3.0 from berkeley as a kid with a 3.5 or something from Northwestern (their grades are inflated).

Easier than I expected so far. I had high expectations of Berkeley’s difficulty tho(especially with the nickname Berzerkeley). It’s really easy to find yourself with free time.

@daynnight

I don’t know about that and you shouldn’t assume that. If you think about it … do you really think inflation will raise your GPA by 0.5?

Also, it’s not a good mentality to think “Oh, my school is hard and deflated. Therefore, if I don’t do as well as I wanted to do its okay. It’s not me, it’s the school.” Work your hardest and try your best to succeed. Honestly, it’s not THAT hard, and if it is, then seek help.

Wait a min. Average GPA for engineering/arts&sci students at NU is ~3.3. Average SAT there is 1447 overall (a bit higher for engineering/arts&sci). You are saying someone with 1450 on SAT expects to get 2.8 at Berkeley. I think you are way off.

Harder (lols at pchem) but my high school was crappy though :P
