<p>Mustang, D and H visited just today. One of the things that they did, and both really enjoyed, was having lunch with current students. H was especially impressed with how open, welcoming and informative the kids were. They answered questions and each told their own story about where they were from, what drew them to Hillsdale, etc… If you have the chance, don’t choose to sit by yourself or just with your family, definately interact with the students.</p>
<p>Read a post about someone’s merit scholarship being added to later with named scholarships bringing their award to a full ride. Did this happen without any inquiry from you or does it take direct contact with FAO? D has merit scholarship. Hoping for more, of course! So unsure of how this works! Advice?</p>
<p>Someone else asked and there was no reply, but I’m almost positive the amount added later was need-based, not additional merit.</p>
<p>Thanks YAHA for your PM
^^Newtron, you may want to PM YAHA with your specific questions.</p>
<p>Thanks for info on aid that was added at a later date!</p>
<p>I believe that Hillsdale’s policy on both the general merit and need-based scholarships is to eventually transfer them to specific named scholarships, and at least annually, the student recipients write letters of thanks with updates on their academic progress to the sponsors. As it should be. :)</p>
<p>Does anyone know how the merit scholarship selection/award process works?
The info about this on the Hillsdale website has changed since this past fall.</p>
<p>My son was admitted with scholarship to Hillsdale with the following stats
CR 800 Writing 760 Math 710 (2270)
AP English Lang 5 English Lit 5 US Gov 4 US History 5
National Merit Finalist</p>
<p>Reasonable EC with awards in speech and debate (eg NCFCA -homeschool competitive speech and debate), extensive volunteering at Academy of Natural Science (Phil), and music.</p>
<p>He visited back in September and had a good interview. He has been invited to apply to the Honors College which is what he is going to spend this weekend doing - only 30 places available.</p>
<p>We were hoping for a larger scholarship but reading this thread has made me a lot more grateful that he was accepted EA.</p>
<p>I was also invited to apply for Honors Program. I haven’t decided if I want to apply, I am concerned that the Honors Program in addition to a double major in very different areas may be to overwelming.</p>
<p>I will always recommend extracurriculars like IM sports, mingling with co-eds, golf at White Oaks and drinking a responsible amount of beer (which combines well with the first three things) over the Honors Program. There’s enough rigor at Hillsdale already; live a little.</p>
<p>I expect there will be responses indicating self/son/daughter has a vibrant social life and is in the Honors Program. I, of course, do not mean to generalize: I met an Honors participant with excellent grades, friends and sanity once. You / your son / your daughter was it. Honest.</p>
<p>Waitlisted. 31 ACT, 3.6 GPA in Honors and AP classes. Varsity Sports and volunteering. No interview or second visit. Accepted into several other more highly rated universities.</p>
<p>Waitlisted.</p>

<p>Well, what can I say? I thought Hillsdale was a great fit for me. After going through the admissions process, the advice I would give to future students would be " Cover your bases because you never know what will happen with these admissions decisions."</p>
<p>My DS was just accepted ED to Hillsdale with half tuition scholarship. Can any of you HD pro’s tell me how that figures in with EFC? I.e. if the EFC is $24,000 and the scholarship is $11,000 and school cost with all included is $32,000, we will then be responsible for the $21,000 because the scholarship comes out first, correct? No financial aid in this scenario?</p>
<p>It’s funny that I had to be accepted to Hillsdale to get my first tastes of rejection:
Discharged from Honors Program after freshman year. Failed officer bid for PRAXIS (Political Econ society), no less in a tiny candidate pool. Rejected application to become Student Ambassador. And going into this winter guns-blazing on Washington D.C. internships for the summer, I’m REALLY keeping my fingers crossed.
In case anyone’s interested, I interviewed in 2009 and got accepted ED. 3.88/4.0 GPA (top 5% of class), 32 ACT. Hillsdale’s acceptance rate was much, much higher (60-70%) just that long ago. I’m now convinced that if it weren’t, I would not have been accepted. Not a chance. That’s just the truth. And while it’s sobering for me, it’s very good news for the future of Hillsdale College. I can accept that.
Take nothing for granted, people. Best of luck to all of you and yours. (Keep us updated.)</p>
Joining this old thread. @loveneweng where did you end up going?
This year, for those of you who don’t know, Hillsdale eliminated the EA application. I applied ED; letters are sent on the 1st of December. I am visiting again on Monday (2nd official visit; fifth stay on campus.) My interview was exactly one month ago and I submitted my app one month before the deadline. My mom, grandmother, six aunts/uncles, and three cousins have graduated from Hillsdale. One cousin is currently attending Hillsdale, and my grandfather was the on-campus physician for many years. Needless to say, Hillsdale is a fundamental part of my history, and I strongly support its educational philosophy and all of its political and ideological morals and ideals.
I will update on December 1 or 2, whenever I receive the letter. If anyone else applied ED, let me/us know as well!
Hi Charger2020,
Made application to Hillsdale ED Fall 2016. I don’t have the legacy component that you have, so you are one up on me! I’ve attended three of the high school summer programs…Churchill tour was awesome in July! I’ve attended one college visit day on campus last November, stayed on campus preliminary to each of the three trips, but had my college interview in my region. Ditto your comments on the school! My interests are in history and political science.
I’m eager to hear whether or not I’ve been accepted. Wonder if we will hear from our counselor via email as well? Just a few more days…Good luck to you!
Good luck to you as well!! Perhaps we will see one another on campus next fall? Please keep me posted on the status of your application! I hope both of our envelopes contain good news.
