I see it as something else as well.

I don't think of anything opressive or morally wrong when I see a Confederate flag, I just think redneck. But hey, that's just me and my myopic, meaningless opinion ;).

Confederates are silly, but then again so are Pennsylvanians :)

Yeah, I live in rural New Jersey (About 10 minutes from Matamoras, Pennsylvania).

Confederate flags everywhere.

I'm pretty sure that up here, it's not a symbol of southern pride.

I just don't think I could live somewhere with dominant conservatism.......it could be anywhere in the U.S., but the South is especially full of conservative states.

Yeah..I live in NC and I see the Confederate flag everywhere..I personally don't like it and to me it is a symbol of intolerance. Obviously it's within people's rights to fly the flag, though.

I don't really like the South because of the confining conservatism..I plan to go to college either at UNC-Chapel Hill (which is known to be pretty liberal) or somewhere north of here.

I do love the weather, though :)

You and your crazy southern weather.

It is too hot for me down here (VA). I wanted to go somewhere a bit more mild, but alas I won't be going too far away.

47 and sunny :)

Just kidding, it's not sunny.

It's 56 where I live...very cool, but it will get a lot warmer shortly. Then I will bake, but I will not get sunburn.

Ouch. Sunburn.

I've blistered from the Canadian sun.

I baked under the Jamaican sun. :)

Jamaica's a tad bit closer to the equator.

True, just a tad bit closer.

Still, blistering from a Canadian sun! Have you no pride....

I remember in PS when they taught the Civil War. They made us think that the confederates were filthy animals who disrespected the US. I find that to be hogwarsh at best. The confederates were fighting for state rights, not for slavery. The CSA would have beat the Union had it better supplies and rail lines. Those yankees had pathetic generals that is fo certain.

Shaddix, why does heritage "tickle" you. When I view a confederate flag, I feel a sense of heritage; don't feel animosity. Course, there are a lot of politically correct liberals here.
GIT R' DONE, Y'ALL!

I am very proud that I've blistered in Canada.

It'll make skin cancer all the more fun.

This has nothing to do with this thread.

I HATE KOBE BRYANT

GO SUNS

Back to the original question--

Here in California (at least in my town) there is a VERY high proportion of Mexican immigrants. Your question is very timely what with all the hubbub over that legislation about making it a felony to come here illegally. There are protests constantly, and many of them include walking out of class and marching down the streets with Mexican flags. It's really controversial because some people think that if the immigrants really want to be legal Americans, they should display only the American flag.

Anyway, there are a few neighborhoods in my town where there are lots of Mexican flags on display, but that's mostly like right now, with the protests, and during holidays. There are always parades for holidays like Cinco de Mayo and el Dia de los Muertos where people wave flags.

And P.S., we're not even that far South. Not at all, actually - I'm in the Bay Area.

Well, what exactly is this heritage everyone keeps speaking of? I mean I don't see people relishing the times of WWI and WWII. So do people feel a sense of heritage for the Confederacy...an entity that no longer exists...that is what tickles me.

I keep hearing Southern Pride/heritage ,but what exactly is it?

So do they hang [applicable] flag up at restaurants and such? We fly the, at restaurants, clubs, the legion. Not everywhere, but maybe at about half(?)the places that fly the US flag.
